Boiler exploded after repair

Sorry bit long.
Recently my boiler broke down and as i have BG breakdown cover they came out and replaced a part. This wasnt covered under the agreement, so i paid £300 for it. A few weeks later i noticed water on the floor of the boiler cupboard. BG came out and said a screw hadnt been tightened so the water was leaking out (not sure where from in system, but pressure gauge was showing leveks were ok).
Roll on a month later and the central heating didnt fire up. The cutout light was showing on the boiler, and usually you just press this to restart. I pressed the button and it fired up. Went and turned the hot tap on to washup and there was an almighty boom from the boiler. Went running to boiler and its literally exploded. The casing has been ripped off the screws and mangled, the insides of the boiler are bent and show smoke damage.
I immediately turned off gas supply and called BG. They came out, disconnected the boiler and the engineer took photos (dont know if for personal use, or documents) as hes never seen a boiler explode to that extent before.
So, i really want to know, if a regularly serviced and maintained boiler should explode, or whether BG may have caused it to happen, by not repairing it correctly? The pressure guages show the pressure within the system is correct, so is the cause most likely a gas leak and if so, again, can that just happen?

Any chance of any pictures as we might be able to see from them what part of the boiler has gone boom.0

If it was a gas leak, we would be seeing it on the evening news, so unlikely to be gas!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Oh also forgot to say, pipe with grill over end, that vents out external wall was blown out and landed over 10ft away0

The same thing happened to me years ago in a rented house. I was in the room at the time and it scared the crap out of me.
Caused by a slight leak that filled the casing up with gas.0 -
If it were me, I'd pay an independent gas engineer to write a report on the cause of the problem. BG have got a vested interest in looking at it and saying it wasn't down to their repair.0

This is a very good point, and one I'd certainly take myself.0 -
As pink teapot said, get a independent gas-engineer to have a look and try and diagnose the problem.
British gas clearly have a vested interest and may not give you a proper diagnosis. It could be a number of things shoddy workmanship, faulty replacement part, other faulty part in the boiler.
And in future, I would always recommend using small local firms. A lot of these people at big companies like British Gas aren't help accountable for mistakes they make and it could potentially been much worse if you were standing next to it when it happened."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
Do not forget the children!!!
One sleeping in the room with a dangerous boiler!!!0 -

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0
