No Fensa cert or guarantee worry - Advice please

Hi. We got some windows and door fitted last week. The fitter works for Fensa approved company. He has done a great job. However, I have been worried sick the last few days as he only gave me a delivery note and said that was for the guarantee. Also he did not mention Fensa certificate. He also wanted cash. I gave him some cash but wrote cheque for the rest. He asked me to put it in wife's name to avoid paying tax. Not happy about that but had to pay him. Not sure what to do as need Fensa cert and guarantee. I would have been happier to pay a bit more to put it on the books. I chose the fitter as builder to do kitchen recommended him. He fitted door and window in kitchen last year. He said I would get certificate but I never did. Obviously we have been a bit naive. Need advice on what to do as I am making myself really ill. Can't concentrate, eat or sleep properly. Worried he will refuse to give me receipt.:(

So you used him last year, didn't get a FENSA cert, but used him this year.
Why?Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
You can check Fensa certificates for your property here:
http://www.fensa.org.uk/asp/certificate.asp#
By the sounds of it, highly unlikely they've registered (tiny chance certificate lost in post), but worth a look.
Suggest you then look here: http://www.fensa.org.uk//pdfs/FENSA%20_Consumer%20Guide%20to%20cowboys_V1_reduced%20size.pdf0 -
Was he wearing a sixgun and ten gallon hat? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

Why do you need a FENSA cert? You are possibly only likely to need it when you come to sell the house, and if desperate, you can always call out the council Building Control officer who will issue the certificate, albeit for a fee.
I agree the fitter should supply one, but it's nothing to lose sleep over if he doesn't.0 -
The only people who are bothered about that Fensa cert is a lawyer. Why do you need a FENSA cert? You are possibly only likely to need it when you come to sell the house, and if desperate, you can always call out the council Building Control officer who will issue the certificate, albeit for a fee.

Ask yourself, you have found your dream home, you can afford it, but the seller cant find a bit of paper. You can see the window (s) you can check that they keep out the weather, are you really going to lose your dream house over a Fensa cert?
I sold a house two years ago with out a Fensa, their lawyers picked it up . but I just said I didn't have one.Buy or don't..... the buyers saw sense.0 -
Same as above. Buyer's solicitor picked it up. I said I don't have a certificate... do you want the house or not? They did.0

We bought a house a few months ago without double glazing yet we had a FENSA certificate - according to that website we have one too - how very odd.
We had no clue what FENSA was and I agree with the above, it matters little to 99% of buyers. I can understand wanting to get the documentation but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.0 -
I wouldn't worry about it, I put in all the windows in my last house myself, never done it before but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do it.
My new house, I was concerned about having a Fensa certificate, so I had a Fensa approved company carry out the work.
I know which installation I know was better done. I ended up having the profesionals back a number of times sorting out niggles & I'm still not overly happy with them. I wish I'd done them myself now although it would have taken weeks instead of a few days for the install.0 -
I phoned fitter last night. He said he would sort it out today and ring me tonight. Hope he keeps word. Also may contact company for proper guarantee for peace of mind. If not I'll report them.0

I purchased a property which had no Fensa certificate. My solicitor said I need to take out some insurance in case I ever have problems with the council.i never took the insurance and have never had any problems.0
