Thanks for your replies guys, much appreciated.

I take on board what you are saying LADYMCBETH however, I moved around considerably when I was younger and if anything it broadened my horizons immensely.

I agree that happiness is important however, there needs to be a balance. Schooling where we currently are is dire and the prospects post 16 aren't great.

It all comes down to timing though and if things aren't doable in the timescale that I have ie before September this year when the new school year starts, then it will have to be postponed. I wouldn't dream of moving when my DD was during her GCSE's.

AndyT678 - I am also a management accountant and so would hope to find something in the area - I have already looked into some of the organisations that you have mentioned below. I did consider Bristol as I quite like the city however, I'm not sure how child friendly it would be.

I most definitely wouldn't move until school places were confirmed and there was a job lined up.

I like Bristol. Lived there for a few years. Plenty of people live in Cheltenham or Gloucester and commute either by train or car.

    Are you qualified? CIMA?

I hadn't really thought of commuting to Bristol. Maybe that's an option.

I'm on my finals - CIMA. Hope to be fully qualified very soon!

Trying to be a little constructive to the OP, Gloucester does have it's problems, due to lack of long term investment, but there are good areas.
If you had the ultimate choice, somewhere around Longlevens would be ideal. It's close to Sir Thomas Rich's gramar school (not sure if your kids qualify for this), but it's an excellent school. Good bus routes, older and newer parts, local shops all around the place and close to Chosen Hill so the kids can disappear for the day
yes I did used to live there. You can get some reasonably priced decent size houses in Longlevens (might be more expensive than Wales though!)
    Hope that helps

Lots more options for jobs in Bristol.

Exams this month? Good luck - must be tough to study with a job and 2 kids.

In / around stroud / dursley area would be ok... its half way between glos/chelt and bristol, being close to the M5... stroud isnt too costly either (not the prettiest town argueably) but big enough -

Also just to throw a spanner in the works - We live in a lovely town in the cotswolds 10miles north of swindon - (Its in Wiltshire approx 1mile south of gloucestershire border - so approx 15% cheaper (Post code is SN rather than GL) and are located perfectly for commuting to Swindon, Cheltenham / Glos / Bath / Bristol / Oxford / Reading - all do-able I also know plenty of people who commute to West London etc... Plenty of good schools too! My wife is from rural South Gloucestershire (Near Tetbury) and we've both done various commutes here and there - :-) (whilst freelancing - have commuted to all the above)
  • I too am an accountant (ACCA) - I made the move from South Wales to Bristol a few years ago.

It's a great city, and you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding work. That said, once we have kids we plan on leaving the city, we both grew up in the country and want our kids to have that opportunity. We're looking at the Backwell/Chew Valley area.

I'd choose Somerset over Gloucestershire every time, but mainly because it's further from the m-i-l!
