Searching for a specific filename/url

Hi All

I think someone may have 'stolen' some pictures from my website - I know there's nothing I can do about it, but I was trying to turn detective and try to see if my pictures had been used on another site

I've googled for the .jpg image name, and it doesn't even find the one on my own website, let alone anyone elses, so I'm a bit confused!

Is there a way of searching for a url which ends or contains a specific filename??

I agree tineye.com is useful.

If you are really concerned about this then an option to stop/track such things is the Digimarc service.

There is also quite a bit you can do about it if you find your images have been stole. If you have ownership of the image/image rights then firstly reporting the website to the hosting company with evidence of the image theft should deal with the issue. Hosting company can be found via a whois search normally and using stolen images will be against the vast majority of webhosts terms and conditions.

You can also issue an invoice for usage to the website involved but to be honest on the occasions I have dealt with this a direct email which if ignored a report to the websites host is normally the fastest way to deal with such things.

I would imagine that's because google is mainly concentrating on giving search results for the content of your site, and the .jpg name will only appear in the source unless you specifically name the file in the content as well.

If I had stolen an image I would probably have renamed it - not that I would do that.

You're not clear if they've stolen/rehosted the image on their own server ... or if they are hotlinking to your image.

You can stop them hotlinking through your cpanel/similar on your host if that's what they're doing.

If they've stolen it they've most likely renamed it, so the image searching's best to try to find it.

Hi All - many thanks for the hints - although I can't find any other versions of my pictures - not even my original!!!!

I can't prove one way or another if they're being lifted and certainly understand if they've been renamed I haven't a hope - I was initially just curious and this has lead me to want to understand why I can't search and find a specific jpg image - so all a bit of an excercise anyway.

For those super-sleuths who want to prove me wrong - where is the following image????

What made you think that someone has stolen your pictures in first place, if you can't find it at all?

My statcounter showed me that someone looked at every picture on the website - no proof but not happened before.

Like I said I'm not concerned about it.. much... but am now more curious than ever as to how to 'find' specific files!!
