Crumpets From Tesco

  • As mentioned, it is not necesarily illegal to sell food past its Best Before date, but it is illegal to sell food which is a health hazard. Most large retailers have a blanket ban on selling food past its BB date to be on the safe side. It is not uncommon for bakery items such as bread (especially white bread for some reason) and crumpets to grow mould within a day of their Best Before date, particularly in warm weather. It's also worth noting that it's Best Before, not Best By as some shop staff seem to think. This distinction is insignificant in the case of foods with a long shelf life, but things like crumpets should be sold the day before their BB date at the latest, so the mouldy crumpets were actually sold not one but two days after they should have been.
In this instance, since Tesco have been made aware of the problem and have refunded and apoologised, I don't think any further action is required unless the problem recurs. If it does, I would then take the offending item of food with its receipt to my local Trading Standards office.

Nothing like. Stock comes from the local store and is picked from the normal shelves by a normal person - no underhand activity.

You got a refund and an apology from the store manager. You say you're still not happy but what more do you want to be done?

Kuohu you seem to have missed the bit where they said Tesco. Of course as it's Tesco then mouldy crumpets = compensation, letters to Terry Leahy's home address and pickets outside the store.

I think you should ask them for a million pounds compensation.

Or, you could just accept that they made a mistake and have already apologised to you.

They have got it right. They have refunded you after your complaint. The mouldy crumpets was because of some shop floor worker not doing their job properley.

What exactly do you want them to do?

Anyway, cut the mould off and get munching on your now free crumpets.

I have occasionally had problems with tesco.com to do with sell-by dates and less than fresh fruit and veg, I think the thing is to monitor everything you recieve from now on and if you have a problem always let them know. If the problem persists, make a complaint and tell them that if they continue to send you substandard products you will no longer use the service, this should kick them into action!

Me too, I was getting sick of throwing food in the bin that had gone off and was still in the sell by date. I called the store and the cheeky manager said "we are not responsible for how you store the food", so I get my fresh stuff from Sainsburys now and only go to Tesco for washing powder and tinned goods, I know I lose out on the clubcard points but what's the point in buying food that I'm going to have to throw in the bin.

I bought an out of date item worth £2.00 I acutally paid £1 cos it was reduced. When I got it home I realised it was nearly 1 month out of date. Asked in the store they offered my money back and no compensation. I rang the TESCO's customer helpline freephone they sent me a £5 TESCO voucher card and a lovely letter.
