Hermes, Yodel and the like may be cheaper, but I find they can be inconvenient for the recipient. Where I have the option, I prefer to pay (a little extra) for better quality of service.

I have used CollectPlus for heavy items. I print the label at home and drop it off at the shop around the corner. They deliver direct to the customers house, fully tracked...

Custardy, as you seem to be in an argumentative mood, I too will continue to play.

As I have stated, I expect to pay a premium for an enhanced service, but 1000% seems unjustifiable, and also uncompetetive.

Also, my point is that RM are obviously making a LOT of money (have a look at the recent profit figures), so they could easily afford to be more competetive and compete with the courier companies. in fact it would probably increase the amount of customers and therefore profits if they were to do so.

There are a lot of people eg ebay traders, who have shifted from RM to courier companies in the last couple of years and the main reason is price.

if its uncompetitive. Who would use it?
I think you are hung up on your item being a letter.
unfortunately a secure service that is separate has a base cost.

Have you looked at the profit figures?
Look at RMs size and turnover. It may seem a big number but its a company with a lot of issues to fix. technology being one of them.

Go back once more and look at my post. more people using RM would mean they make more money.
well that depends on what exactly people are using it for.
If its large packets. The handling costs increase through the network.
So revenue may rise, but will profit?

Once again,RM group has a courier arm. So why are you insistent on RM letters competing with couriers?

The bottom line is that if RM can deliver a letter first class usually next day for 62p, it seems a huge jump to £6.40 for a guarantee and a signature. Thats a 1000% increase. I expect to pay a premium obviously, but 1000%!

You are obviously not reading the post by custardy.....
SD items travel separately via secure transit.
The insurance level is £500 vs £20 on that 62p letter.
It also covers a lot more types of items.

You picked Special Delivery.......this is a separate secure transit operation covering £500 in compensation and for a little bit more covering consequential loss.

It would seem you have paid for extra coverage that you didn't actually need. If that is the only way you can get guaranteed next day delivery then its your choice.......but you were covered for loss up to £500 even if you letter wasnt actually worth anything.

You pays your money and makes YOUR choice.

It's funny when people complain about RM's prices for postage. If it's so expensive, why not deliver it yourself?

a little stupid, no? im sure theres something you complain about, petrol prices, electric / gas prices, the price of food etc etc why not go and farm some crops, or drill for oil yourself :rotfl:
