The reason I don't always use a courier is that i am not always in to await them and sometimes have to drop in a PO while I am passing.
The bottom line is that if RM can deliver a letter first class usually next day for 62p, it seems a huge jump to £6.40 for a guarantee and a signature. Thats a 1000% increase. I expect to pay a premium obviously, but 1000%!

Did you even bother to read my post?
Letters travel through a network designed for high numbers.
SD items travel separately via secure transit.
The insurance level is £500 vs £20 on that 62p letter.
It also covers a lot more types of items.

So we have convenience now,So how much is your time worth?
You chose to send via SD because it was convenient. Perhaps those courier prices would go up if they ran a network of shops to drop packets off at?

and finally. You know about couriers,so the price you pay is your choice

    I've been Money Tipped!
Whenever I send parcels with Royal Mail they weigh it, ask what service I want and tell me the price - I have an option at that point to go ahead or say 'no thank you' and go elsewhere (I think they expect me to say no sometimes, because I'm usually sending biggish parcels via airmail which is eye-wateringly expensive).

If you were told a price and thought 'that's too expensive, I can get the same/better service cheaper elsewhere' then why did you proceed with using the Royal Mail service?
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

I don't know why some people are being so sniffy to the OP - except for knowing that a courier is cheaper and not using one. That's just crazy! I've been using Hermes since the first horrendous round of price increases by RM - was that about a year ago? Maybe more. Never had a problem with them. Never a parcel lost or broken. Ok they're a bit slower than RM but I always tell my buyers that and offer them the option of Hermes or RM and not a single one has ever opted for RM. Money talks in these tightened times.

Thought you were always telling us the Royal Mail and the Post Office were separate companies.

So they don't, in fact, "run a network of shops to drop packets off at". It's also not relevant as other couriers have drop-off points, eg Yodel with Collect+ and Hermes ParcelShop.

I never said they did,did I? The drop off points you refer to are existing shops.which the courier s pay fees for as well. However obviously not convenient for the OP though.

Well, you did say "Perhaps those courier prices would go up if they ran a network of shops to drop packets off at?"

What exactly were you referring to there?

Not sure why you keep digging, but lets play.
THe OP is aware of couriers
they have a cheaper courier that collects from their house
now I would assume this courier doesn't offer a convenient shop for the OP,or they would have used it?
    seems pretty clear to me
