Phone contract

I had a 24 month phone contact with orange, I honored the cost of each monthly line rental charges and continued to pay monthly charges for quite sometime after my original contract had expired.

I did not renew my contact and therefore stopped payments months after my contract terms had expired.

I received a letter from orange on 5/5/14 informing me that I had outstanding charges, which I had to pay with immediate effect. Orange state they had contacted me several times but this was the only correspondence I had received.

Am I obliged to pay the outstanding charge?

    Yes.

Your contract didn't "expire" - your minimum term ended. The contract proceeded as agreed.

Yes! If you want to cancel your contract you must give them 30 days notice at the end of the minimum term.

It never fails to astound me the number of people who don't read a contract before they sign it.

    Unnecessary.

You need to phone them up to cancel it. If you just cancelled the direct debit then you're just cancelling the means of payment, the monthly bill until you cancel the contract is still due. If you dont pay you will end up with a default on your credit profile.
