Shoulder

Hello,
I'm not asking for medical advice, just some support/input etc.
I managed to re-dislocate my shoulder last week. Was taken to A&E, then trauma clinic by my CPN.

They said that because it's come out twice (in such a short space of time), it's most likely going to come out again. If it does, I shall need an operation to repair it.

Has anyone had the operation? What can you tell me about it?
How long is recovery time? Would I need someone helping me around at home?

Thank you xx

    Hi Rosie,

I haven't had this type of injury, but I hope your shoulder gets better soon.

No 3 son had this problem - after injuring it playing rugby, it would pop out all too frequently and eventually he had surgery. Basically, they release ligaments muscles on the front and tighten them on the back (very rough description, I know). It was done as day surgery, he had an arm sling for a week or so and physio - and that was that!

    hey rosie

i have a problem like this my shoulders dislocate multiple times a day so i know its not fun

before you do make any decision about surgery make sure you get any questions answered and you understand what will be happening and things like recovery times are

have you discussed alternatives like physio with your doctors?

its not too bad mines because of a congenital defect so I can usually get it back in with a bit of a whack otherwise hubby has been shown how to do it have only had to go in 15 or so times since we were shown how to do it because we cant it back in

mine happens in both shoulders so im fine doing it myself unless both go at once lol

keep up with the exercises they do help even though they hurt like hell

hope you are feeling better xxx

After dislocating my shoulder once or twice it started to happen more regularly and I had the operation last year - they opted for keyhole in the end, but the decision will depend on what the consultant decides given the state of the ligaments and how you will be using it (active sportsperson?).

Since the op it hasn;t dislocated again, but I'm, still pretty concious of not pushing it (damn painful when it does go). It still doesn;t feel 100% and I definitely still compensate for having a weak side, but worth having definitely, if it reduces the chance of future dislocations.

    thank you very much.

the first time it happened, it was out for 7 hours.

second time I put it back in myself before being taken from hospital room to a&e. that was certainly interested. it kind of feels like it's always on the verge of coming out since I did it? though x ray shows it is properly in place
  • There are many different types of surgery for a dislocation. My partner needed a bone graft to keep his shoulder in place (Latarjet proceedure) - this can be up to 6 months rehabilitation.
