SCS blunder

I bought a sectional corner unit in dec and SCS delivered and it and assembled it.

Last month I tried to split the sections of the sofa as I desperately needed to clean under it and my wedding ring had slipped between two of the seats

Long story short...when the delivery men assembled my sofa they put clips on the "runners" that join the chairs together which apparently can't be removed and fixes the units together in one configuration permanently.

Now when they delivered it they neither asked me if I wanted this or told me that they would do this. I had discussed at the shop when I bought it the flexibility of the units and how it could be changed into different configurations.

I got in touch with scs (who told me the clips were permanent) and they have said tough, basically, they won't come out and separate the units. I now have a five piece corner unit which is too heavy to move in one piece and could not be removed from my house at all due to its size (should I want to move house). More importantly my wedding ring is jammed between 2 chairs and it can't be rescued without parting the chairs.

I'm paying for this soda in monthly instalments and am seriously thinking of stopping paying so that someone will come and attempt to separate the units to remove it from my house!!!

Does anyone know how I stand on getting someone out/is there an ombudsman group or similar I can contact!?

Many thanks

Can you prove you were told the sections could be moved?

Do not stop paying, all this will do is ruin your credit record.

SCS may be a member of the furniture ombudsman scheme, but in the absence of evidence to support your view you will struggle.

I'm not sure how I could prove it.

When I originally went back into the shop to ask they told me about the clip but said they just lifted off...would this suggest that I couldn't have been told at point of sale. That and I discussed with get sales man buying another chair after if had time to have a play with the configuration. Other than that I have no written proof EIHER WAY! IN fact I wasn't even aware that you could fix them permanently until customer services told me

Not really sure what to do. Stopping paying seems my only option because the settee is no use In The current configuration and I want my wedding ring back!!!!

SCS won't care if you stop paying - they'll have already been paid by the finance company that you make monthly payments to.

Stopping payments will not harm SCS at all, as stated above, you owe the money to the finance co.

You could put a complaint in with them and say you want them to sort it out. They have a responsibility too.

Cant you just unscrew the clips yourself and save all the bother. Have you actually looked at them? If you get OH to lift the sofa up a little, they may only be a spring loaded clip, similar to what you get on a bed base to hold the 2 pieces together. I cannot see them being a permanent fixture. People wouldn't be able to move house if they were and I would be amazed if they were a new feature to sofas.

They, more than likely look like this type of thing

    Even how to do it.

You have the weekend to look into it, you can do it yourself.

Step one, stop making them out to be the bad guys - it's your fault for dropping the ring down there in the first place!

It would probably be cheaper to buy a new wedding ring than to stop paying your finance agreement, trash your credit rating and possibly end up with court/bailiff fees as well. ;)

Permanent is a relative term. Most clips will come off with a big enough lever or hammer.

Yes, had they not dropped the ring down there then SCS wouldn't have fastened the sofa together, would they?

Clipping the sofas together permanently is ridiculous - what if you move house or want a new sofa???

These sofas are sold as movable. A friend of mine had one as a corner sofa, then unclipped it when she moved to a bigger house, and bought a new side bit so it could become two sofas.

I'd tell them you weren't informed they'd be permanently fixed and want them separating without damage.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
