Thanks for replies and all the good advice.. I do have an acronis backup of xp, its only over 14GB so will keep that.

Just out of interest just in case I wanted to transfer the acronis backup date to dvd's is there software available that would take a ascronis .tib file and split it so as to fit on dvd's.

    Probably not?

    Thanks a lot

you can tell acronis to split to any size during a backup, or backup direct to dvd

if you mean split an existing backup, there are lots of free file splitters out there, but it would be fiddly to restore from without combining back into one tib on a hard disk first

xp service packed to sp3 was about 3GB last time I checked, and fits easily on one dvd - if it's 14Gb, you've got some extra's

    Disagreements are often interesting.

or you could just backup with macrium, it's much faster.

I know what nlite, and other similar things can do, and some of the problems it can cause, I've done it .. it was a waste of time then, as it would be now. When xp ownership is on a downward spiral, it's even more a waste of time. In fact most of the updates post sp2 are a waste of time too, cue security paranoia.

Unless the op has an abundance of xp machines he wishes to reinstall, it's rather pointless, although people might find it interesting from a technical point of view, it's unlikely to get used in anger

Well, I always found nLite helpful. Removing the unnecessary crap, slipstreaming SSD drivers (so you can actually install XP on a machine without a traditional HDD), service packs, hotfixes and drivers seems quite appealing to me -- even on a single machine.

You could just backup the whole OS and reinstall, but (in my experience) it's much better to keep your data on separate partitions and reinstall XP cleanly if necessary.

It doesn't really matter if we disagree. I'm just trying to explain why nLite is useful -- I'm not forcing anyone to use it :-)

It's surprising how few people understand the meaning of number. :)

I still have to ask at least twice....and sometimes still don't get a proper answer....as you know. ;)

If you're worried that Microsoft will pull the updates, download them all with

    http://download.wsusoffline.net/

There is a client program included which will install all these updates for you afterwards.
If it works as well for XP as it has done for a fresh install of Win7 that I have done then it is a waste of space.

I would have expected a few updates missing that were more recent than when I produced the update but not 51!

I don't know if this was meant for me or not, but No, its a pcspecialist custom ordered PC. (Good company to buy from,by the way)

I am a great believer in acronis backups and EasyBCD but just thought I would try the suggestion in computer shopper to make the xp DVD but it does seem the backup is easiest way to go.

    Thanks for all the advice
