I remember once seeing some guidance that in the event of turbo diesel runaway everyone present should retire to a minimum of 50M away until the engine catastrophically fails or stops of its own accord.

    Bloody hell....I'm sticking with petrol.

Do you fancy being in an enclosed space with somebody trying to stop a full-throttle engine by sticking it in gear and letting the clutch out? Seems like a nice way to make a car-shaped hole in a wall, always assuming no other vehicle gets in the way first.

No - don't fancy it in the least, mind you, I've witnessed professional mechanics doing plenty of things that I wouldn't dream of doing in million years.

Undoing a stuck wheelnut by lifting the drive wheels of the ground, putting a socket on the nut, bracing the breaker bar against the ground, then flooring the accelerator was a particularly impressive way of saving the effort of finding the impact wrench, and also succeeded in punching a fist sized hole in a breeze block wall...

    happens with turbo petrols aswell.

personally I have in my mind to save a huge bill would be to know where your fuel cut off switch is, if you get turbo run on flick the cut off switch no fuel no engine running.

A petrol engine won't burn the engine oil as fuel, and because a petrol engine won't run away since the air is throttled.

Won't make the slightest difference, because the engine's burning the sump oil, leaking past the seals, as fuel. There's no ignition to cut. There's no air restriction to stop it thrashing it's nadgers off, since diesels are managed by metering the fuel. And you've now got an unmetered, more-than-adequate supply of fuel. Until it runs out, or something internally protests at the excessive engine speed.

Absolutely. In a petrol closing the throttle will stop anything like that occurring. In the event of a broken throttle you could pull the fuel pump fuse or more obviously cut the ignition either of which will stop the engine quickly. Since a diesel operates on compression ignition, can burn oil as a fuel and has no throttle plate none of them will work to stop a diesel engine running away.

They look quite spectacular (I don't think I'd want to be as close as the guy filming this is)

I've seen a shogun that had fell over and when the salvage truck come he drove it on the truck with it doing about 25000 rpm and plenty of smoke all due to the turbo being full of oil only way to stop it is highest gear and dump the clutch pretty rapid and hope if that fails get out and dive for cover

The only way to stop a runaway diesel (petrols can't do it!) is to block off the air intake pretty sharpish with whatever is on your back and hold onto it. They will try and suck shirts, jumpers, small children etc., in, but once they've no air, they stop.

It amazes me how many muppets on youtube seem not to comprehend the danger of an engine blowing up.

The acceleration of a piston down the bore is quicker than that of a high velocity rifle bullet down a breech - and weights a load more. Shrapnel punching through engine castings and bonnets as if made of paper could be lethal.

No, it doesn't. We're talking about diesels sucking up sump oil and using that as fuel. That cannot happen in a petrol engine, turbo or not.

... he put it into neutral, then put his foot on the brakes, and slammed it into a high gear causing the engine to bog out
