Highway code 170

Options
How come a significant proportion of the drivers don't understand or know Highway Code 170, which states, "Watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way."

If the vehicle is really close, obviously I don't step onto the road but when there vehicle is far away and I step out, I get hooted

  • Many of them don't known what the flashing amber lights fitted to the corners of their vehicles are for either. How is a pedestrian to known if you are going to turn? If you don't signal.

Shouldn't you both be asking your questions of motorists?

    Maybe on the motoring board?

Its a 2 way street ( pardon the pun !)

Pedestrians should not be talking on their phones when crossing the street, but many do ! Should be a law of ' Walking without due care and attention, punishable by the Birch !

Totally agree with you. On the route to my son's nursery is a road that used to be a cul de sac. The road curved round to the right, but indicating was unnecessary as it was all the same road, just with a curve right.
Now, however, they have opened up the road so that it's a straight road leading through to the shops with a right turn down to the community centre and a daycare centre.
People still don't indicate and I'm fed up of being beeped at when I've looked around and seen no indicating cars so deemed it safe to cross!

How many motorists even read the highway code once they've passed their test?

How many pedestrians actually know the correct way to cross a road?
Zebra crossings and pedestrian crossings are there to be used, not just to stand around gabbing, or tying the dog to, whilst you go in a shop. No, they decide to walk diagonally across a road, totally ignoring the crossings and then pretend to speed up, whilst not speeding up at all !

Only this morning, I was trying to turn left out of my road. At the junction, nose of the car on the double white lines( give way/stop). Just as about to move out, was actually moving at time and slammed on, 3 schoolgirls walk round a corner, right in front of my car, two on phones, not looking at all. They could have walked safely around the back of my car, by taking a couple more steps.

Don't they teach the highway code/green cross code anymore in school?

I'm surprised that high end cars such as Porsches don't seem to be fitted with them...

No, they don't. That's the parents responsibility!

Works both ways. Drivers need to pay more attention to the highway code, pedestrians need to relearn the green cross code.

I have been a pedestrian, seen no cars coming and started to cross, when a car pulls out of a junction further down and actually accelerates towards me, holding down his horn as he did, even though I was 75% of the way across when he starts speeding down.

I've seen elderly people who aren't the fastest of walkers wait at a crossing, cross on green, haven't quite made it across by the time it goes green for vehicles and they've been revved at and pipped at.

My friend used to cross at a crossing each time she walked home from work. She only ever crossed on the green man. At this particular crossing, it was just after a bend and drivers would come screeching around the bend 80% of time go through the lights and it seemed an almost daily occurrence she had a close shave.

Every single day in my car though, I encounter 90% of pedestrians who step OFF the payment before even looking!! I find this absolutely incredible. I was always taught to stop at the edge of the pavement, look both ways and cross, and recently I've been feeling like the only one taught to do this.

Also the fact that headphones/mobile phones obviously must have a shielding device as they seem to remove any necessity to check before crossing and you can simply walk into any road.

I live in a big student city and they are the worst offenders. I've seen many a car tootling along at 20-30 mph when suddenly a student with headphones literally walks into their path and the car has to slam the anchors on and swerve while said student stands dumbfounded in the road.

Yes, pedestrians do have right of way, however this right does not entitle them to walk into moving traffic, if but only for their safety!

In some countries pedestrians have priority and it's the car that's supposed to stop for them, at least ,I've been told this .

I was driving near my local high school the other week and nearly could have run down several kids who just stepped out without looking.not helped by cars waiting to pick them up badly parked.
