For those interested in the opening post and who may then be helped by the advice given, the op's post was

"I bought a Panasonic TZ30 16 months ago and hardly used it. When I did decide to use it the lens wouldn't open. Since it was only 16 months old I took it back to John Lewis and told them I had expected it to last a lot longer than 16 months. I was told since it was out of warranty tough. I persisted but all I got was the manager being arrogant saying they would send it to Panasonics repair centre and see what they said, if it was a manufacturing fault they would pay, if not tough. Today JL has phoned to say the repair will cost over £80 and as a good will jester they will pay £50 and I pay the rest. I asked for the engineer report and was told it was a general fault. They won't admit to it being a manufacturing fault.
Where do I stand? the camera wasn't cheap, over £200 so it surely should have lasted a lot longer.
    Advice please.
    Thanks."

Where store is that? So that if I'll buy a new cam I won't buy there. It's not worth it

Given that you apparently live in New York it is unlikely you'll be buying anything from JL anyway!

Very arrogant considering JL don't have to do anything from a legal standpoint if it's out of warranty. Not their fault OP didn't use it within 16 months to figure out if there would be any issues with the equipment whilst still INSIDE warranty periods.

It amazes me how many people make purchases from retail institutions then give it hell if the product they purchased fails or develops a fault during their use. I suspect if full and thorough investigations were carried out by the manufacturer's for every individual warranty case, they'd likely find about 98% of these claims were down to negligence or mis-use by the owner.
