How long does phone remain active if not used regularly?

Hi all
I hope someone can help me.
I have purchased a cheap pay as you go phone as a spare/emergency phone for the family....for my sons to take to music festivals etc.
If the phone is not used on a regular basis, how long will the sim remain active?
Should I just send/receive a text from it each month to keep it active?
Sorry if this sounds a stupid question but I remember my ancient old pay as you go phone (brick) was 'cut off' automatically after six months of non use, and I wondered if it was the same nowadays.
Thank you

Hi,
It's Vodafone
thanks!0 -
On Vodafone technically you need to make one call (less than a minute) every three months, BUT if not provided you top it up within 6 it can be reactivated. After that it's history.0

ps. Vodafone regularly do up to 2 free sims before reverting back to charging £2 each. Each sim has £1 credit and if you then also register it another £1 arrives after 28 days.0
