I'm the same as egoode (scarily similar!). Been here 8 years from Sydney, and I love it here. Great job opportunities, great travel and I just love the multicultural melting pot of the whole place.
But, I am going back. The pull of family is too much, and illness etc has made me realize how important family can be. So off we go next year (with a new baby). Maybe in a few years I'll come 'home' to London!

Well I'm not a "foreigner" (yet! Who knows if Scotland become I dependant!) but I'm originally from Scotland and now live In England and I do pine for certain home comforts but it's the whole grass is greener thing really isn't it?

I was born an Essex girl and lived there for my first 22 years - I still wonder what life would be like if had stayed in my home town with all the long term connections and friends. I do love Devon though. I think most people will always do the 'what if' thing but it must be stronger if you actually change countries.

I often feel like this but only recently since having my 1st child.

I've lived in the UK for 11 years (I'm an Aussie). Didn't think I'd be here as long as I have if I am honest. I think about going 'home' more so now because of all my family missing out on seeing their 1st grand child grow up and I admit it was very hard having no direct family in those 1st few months of being a new mum.

We're going to Australia in the summer though for the 1st time as a family and I know it's silly but what makes me want to go back even more is despite my time living and working here and doing everything a citizen would I have no rights to a British passport. That alone has proved very stressful in terms of going to Australia on holiday as I'm travelling on my Aussie passport with the expense of forking out to get another right of abode so I can get back into the UK and of course my husband and little girl will be travelling on UK passports.

Just a minor detail like that makes me sorta feel like I don't belong here anymore as silly as that sounds.

Thanks for the replies so far. Heartening to know there are many out there who feel the same.

Sometimes when we return back for a holiday, which we do about every 1.5 years, you do get that holiday feeling however if we moved of course it will be work, bills and the not so fun stuff in life!

My OH field of work is very specialised so it has to be a very head rather than heart decision. He's worked hard to get where he is, and although he may find a job he loves abroad and we would do everything to try to secure a role before actually moving it's scary. Jobs like he's doing now in UK are very much sought after so if it all didn't turn out it's a scary situation ...

Ahh well ... More mulling over time I guess.

Great travel in Australia?? Really?? You live in such a remote, desolate continent and traveling anywhere culturally different will mean a long haul flight.
I presume that you are originally from UK, a country where you have so many fantastic different travel options, with the whole of continental Europe on our doorstep to start with.
From a travel perspective I believe the UK is geographically a great place. As for your other reasons such as job opportunities then you are probably correct.

They are FROM Sydney not living in Sydney (read the post again). There is a lot to discover with Indonesia, Thailand, Phillipines, Malaysia, Solomon Islands etc etc which are hugely culturally different (which are not hugely long haul flights) plus a continent that has every type of landscape so don't write it off! Have you travelled extensively in Oz or us this just what you think you know?

I've been here for 10 years and never had desire to go back. I miss my family though, specially now, when I've got a son. I'd like him to see his grandparents more.
