I was pleased to note BGas reduced their prices again. I was less impressed when I got my bill and found they were going to increase my DD by 50%. I phoned and the condescending little S***T "Brian" refused to re-instate my previous DD amount depite the fact that I have been paying more than I use and my account is in credit.

I am really don't see why I should be giving BG an interest free loan! I am not very pleased and have written to complain. Anyone else had a similar problem?

BG show all your monthly payments as a credit to your account. So my account could be showing as well in credit today, yet tomorrow my quarterly bill will be debited and I will be well in debit.

Most of the complaints we get here are the opposite to yours - DD not high enough and a debit balance building up; followed by a massive increase in DD.

What justification did BG give for not re-instating your previous DD?

After ages on their "help" line, I get this condescending p***k. He said all my recent bills were estimates, so why the increase says I? You might have used more than we estimated. Well send someone to check and meanwhile put my DD back to what it was. No can do without a reading he says. Let me speak to your supervisor. I will get him to call you ......... and guess what - no call

I can appreciate that having an under estimate could lead to a large bill accruing. However, any good MSE would check their meter reading and if it shows much more than the estimated bill, set aside some cash for the inevitable reconcilliation. I would rather the money gaining interest for me in my account, than for BG

Is there any reason why you can't give them a reason an prove they are wrong?

If people did as you sensibly suggest then we would have virtually no threads in this section.

The fact is that many people on a DD simply do not ever look at their bills until they get a huge reconcilliation bill.

I am convinced some people simply do not understand the DD system or estimated bills(obviously not the OP in this thread). They think it is like the Staywarm system - a fixed monthly payment and that is it!

Do you not agree, that I have already done that?

Best you can do is give an accurate reading, that should change the amount you pay automtically. It's all based on what the system thinks you are going to use over the next year, based on your history.
Remember though that they will be taking more than you use at this time of year to balance the winter period.
Check each statement when it comes in if they have trouble getting readings, this means that when they do estimate it, it should be failry close.

Or cancel the plan, get the refund, go to quarterly bills, then you only pay for what you have used. (but you may lose a discount)

Both my mum and now my brother are having problems with british gas. Both have had bills claiming the meters have been read, neither have been read (have to enter the property) and were well over the actual readings. It tooks my mum months to get this sorted out after having to pay the bill to avoid the baliffs. My brother has just had his false bill so has all the hassle still to go through. He recently swapped to DD and now wishes he hadn't as B Gas are now saying they will increase his monthly DD to over £100 a month.

Thanks for your advice guys. What wound me up most was the attitude of their "advisor". I have calmed down, just a little. Hopefully I will get a better response to my letter.

moneysaver39 - get them some correct reads - ideally with some time between them.
Remind them the meter is inside, it isn't too hard to fix.
If it's not obvious yet, I work there, and when the new system went in, call takers couldn't fix issues like this, but in the last 6 weeks or so we've been training out how to fix it - if the agent can't do it themselves, they should be able to arrange it.

Hope your brother gets it fixed first time.

Indeed, the amount of customers that blame ME because they have an estimated bill when anyone with an ounce of sense would get an estimated bill and think "hmmm should take a reading as mine might be higher" no, they think "wahey small bill" and then go crazy when they get a proper bill.
