Cat ruining fence

I am a homeowner and next door is rented, she has a cat, don't get me wrong she is really nice, but her flipping cat is using the top of my fence as a scratching post. I have mentioned it to her, but she just laughed it off. I know its her cat as i see him doing it.
I don't want an argument after all it's only a fence. So was thinking of repairing it by removing the top piece and replacing it, but the cat will just do it again, do you know of anything i can put on it to stop it being appealing, I don't want to hurt the cat.
thanks

You can get some stuff that you spray on, cats are supposed to hate the smell. One is called Catapult, there's plenty of other makes available. Or a sonic scarer - these emit high-frequency sounds that cats can hear but humans can't ( although actually, my neighbour has one, and the kids can hear it when they walk past, but us adults can't ! )
You could also try a few well-aimed shots with a water pistol - over several days, the cat might get the idea.
If you happen to have a zoo nearby, get a couple of dollops of lion dung and put it nearby - this supposedly works.
Failing that, cover the fence with chicken wire and connect it up to the mains .........0 -
Some foul smelling unction spread on the area it uses should do the trick.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

How big is the cat?. Try sanding the scratched fence.0 -
Mustard? A scatching post gets shredded & when the time comes to clean the paws...
Cheap, potent, hard to spot & if unsuccessful, little harm done. Move up to lion dung etc!
If you get on with the landlord, could you point out that leaving the place in a decent state includes fences? Even if it is technically "your" fence, she shouldn't be laughing off damage.0 -
I bought some cat and dog repellent from Wilkinson's recently and all it smelt of was garlic (although it implied there was a mix of things in it). So I would give that a go.YNWA

Thanks all i will give some of the suggestions a go, Its not a big cat, but it sits there, gets up and scratches, don't fancy the water pistol as she can see the fence from the front window too.
She is also good friends with the landlord, i will just try and resolve without conflict for now.0 -
If a cat has chosen a place as theirs for any reason, it can be hard to rid them of the habit. They are very territorial.
I'm a cat lover & cat owner, but in one of the properties I owned a few years ago I started to notice a load of poo on the roof of my extension within a couple of weeks of moving in. I'd look out of my bedroom window & see all these little mounds. At first I thought it might be foxes, but no it turned out to be one of next door's cats.
I didn't mention it to them as it wasn't their fault & as an animal owner I knew they were powerless to stop it. Over the years I lived there I bought every known deterrent on the market, all turned out to be a complete waste of money. Every few days, but daily in summer, I needed to climb out of my bedroom window & clean it up. I was not a happy bunny.
Eventually the roof of my extension needed to be replaced, not helped by next doors cat scratching at it & lifting the stones to cover his business. I wasn't too pleased at having to have the roof replaced sooner than I might have needed to, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Mr Puss didn't like my new roof & never deposited anything there ever again! :TThe bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

A car battery and a couple of lengths of copper wire should make an effective DIY electric fence. Job done. Perhaps add some lights for novelty value."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
