I can't see that the employer will know that you/your partner broke a leg ABROAD unless you tell them. From the employer's POV you have simply broken your leg whilst on sick leave.

There will doubtless be a point at which the employer can no longer pay sick leave, or 'carry' an employee who is not working, and at this point the employer is likely to to instigate capability procedures, which might end in termination of employment. I do think the fact that the accident happened abroad is a red herring, though.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Isn't that if you want to take it as paid holiday?

    No.

any "holiday" needs approval if it would be a normal working day

There is a bit of an issue on what is "holiday"

If I was sick I might have gone to stay with my parents to recover, is that "holiday" or not.
