I use these to connect my PC to my router

One plug is connected from electrical socket to router by supplied ethernet cable. The other plug is plugged into any other socket near PC and connected to PC by other supplied ethernet cable.
Internet connection is great, even though PC and router are two floors apart. Much better than the Netgear wireless dongle I used previously.0 -
Look in Device Manager and see what connections are listed: though very few PC's come with built in wi-fi.
You can use a PCI card (neater) or a USB adapter (easier to install). No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks everyone for all your help - looks like I need to buy an USB adapter Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to connect the PC to my modem as one is downstairs and the other is upstairs!
Would this work - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/networking/networking/wireless-cards-adapters/bt-600-usb-wireless-adapter-n600-21748977-pdt.html

I'd agree with harrys dad. Powerline adapters are better than wifi for larger distances. Here's a cheap one. I haven't tried this one, but I have a TP Link and two WD 4 way adapters set up on my kit, including TV, Sky box and Xbox:

chessfan, are you a BT Broadband customer, or do you know someone who is ? If so, then you can buy that same dongle directly from BT for £9.0 -

I've been using this TP-Link USB Wireless N adapter in my workstation for the past couple of years and it has proved very reliable. I like its small size and the ease with which it installed.
