The annoying things is that if I cancel with that hotel group and find another hotel (all of which are expensive) I'll end up paying more through fees etc.
If you haven't yet stayed at the hotel, I would go ahead and stay there and then dispute the transaction after you return to the UK to avoid any risk of the reservation being cancelled.
If you don't want to wait, then you have already entered into a contract with the hotel for €469.80, not for the higher amount of £401.54. While you are disputing the transaction with Santander, the hotel must honour the contracted price, otherwise it is in breach of contract. I think you'll find that Irish contract law is very similar to English/Welsh contract law.
The hotel have finally sent me confirmation showing a daily rate of 156.60 euros (nothing is cheap in Dublin). They say they are looking into the issues I've raised and I am also waiting to hear from Santander again.
NFH, your comment is very useful, thanks. I will see what responses I get and report back!
