AOL Broadband and Vista

stand your ground with aol.
i've been with them over a year and had the £9.99 deal with the free router and havn't had a problem so get back on to the helpline and get the free router and cheaper monthly payments.
Oh and when you get it and get the router set up you can get rid of all the aol software on your comp. It'll work a treat with vista.
good luck.0 -
dont use live help. Phone them!
tell them you will leave.
but as said. You can get one for £40 from pc world. And i suspect your laptop has wireless inbuilt as most new ones do.
Plus a router is safer than a modem has it has hardware firewall.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -
Well AOL wouldn't budge - I have been on £9.99 for years and seems they want me shot of that! I bought a Netgear router as recommended by a very nice chap in Comet, got it home but turns out it will work with anything excpet AOL silver. Back to Stage!
Have now telephoned AOL several times and have asked for a MAC number and said I would move to BT if they didn't offer me a router and they still said No. So I have bought a Netgear router from EBay which specifies AOL Silver and Vista compatible and I will try again.
It is so frustrating!
Thanks everyone. And Crabman, I love your style - it was in a similar manner I got £9.99 in the first place

What model router did you buy from Comet and why doesn't it work with AOL Silver?0

Some older USB modems like the BT voyager 105 do not work with Vista because nobody has bothered to write driver software that runs under Vista for these devices. This is nothing to do with what version of the AOL software you use, but you need to use AOL VR with Vista. You could download AOL VR from the AOL UK web site if you could connect to the internet but you cannot because your modem does not work! If you get a router there is no need to install the AOL software. Judging by the number of pop-ups this feeds you, AOL stands for Advertising On Line!
ISPs are worse than banks at offering the best deals to new customers and completely negelecting the old ones. If I were you I would threaten to vote with your feet and move to a new ISP. Phone AOL and ask for your MAC code to make the transfer. If you are lucky you will get put through to the customer retention department who will make strenuous efforts to keep your custom.
If you do end up having to buy a wireless router you can get some good deals at www.ebuyer.com but you would have to set it up yourself, which can be tricky if you have never done this before. On the other hand, if you post here I'm sure somebody could tell you how to do it.Reed0
