  • Hiya... congrats and all that.

My tuppence worth... never say no... instead ask if this extra work is a temporary thing in which case you're more than happy to help out till X can "catch up" on their workload and take back their responsibilities, and when would that be? Or is it a widening of your role on a more long-term basis in which case you're still happy to help but you've been interested in taking a course/sabatical/new direction and could this be a bartering tool to get you where you want to be next?

Either way, you don't say no and you don't lose out.

I'm assured that the colleague thing will be addressed and the work that they're avoiding is actually quite interesting, which surprises me. Who drags their way through the dull prepatory crap, only to pass up on the chance to actually do something challenging? Said colleague is on the phone to recruiters and apparently believes that they're worth £40-50k a year, I suspect a rude awakening :D

Because it's project work, the suggestions about prioritising etc. don't really come into play this time, but they were appreciated. The only reason I'm playing nice is because I think it might benefit my career in the longer term.

I suppose a little bit of self interest never hurts? :)

Must keep saving and investing, I am not an office politics guy :o

Yes to both :) self interest, and investing.

My last job before I went self employed was as a manager for a government work scheme, for a national charity. It started as an admin job, but it got so big, I sort of morphed into a manager :p Thats when I found out that I *had* to have my own agenda: not necessarily playing office politics, tho I had to take account of them, but I never went into a meeting without a sense of what I wanted from it, rather than helping others. I explained this revelation to my assistant when we were on our way to a meeting with a service provider, whose first words at the meeting were "what can I do for you" :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Wow!! Just caught up on thread. Many many congratulations on the news. And some wise comments on job situation. Sounds as if you have a good position on that sorted.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Super exciting day at work after I realised how much fun forecasting is (nerd) :rotfl:

I did a bit of basic research (ok, I went on Google for 5 minutes) and came up with a decent methodology for standardising demand forecasts, applied this to our service measures and now have a working model for something that nobody has managed to do/bothered their bottom to do in several years at my place of work. On the one hand, I'm a bit of a Columbus, but on the other hand, nobody else has heard of Leif Erikson yet :p

Just need to run it by my mentorish to see if it meets their standards.
    • Did some Christmas shopping for boozy gifts (3 male relatives down)
    • Cashed a very generous £50 Christmas cheque that I received, after some minor date change forgery due to forgetful relative!
    • Made about £40 from MB offers
    • Touched up some paintwork in the living room, I've only been putting it off for a year
    • Updated my Am@zon seller account, time for a clearout
    • Posted off all paperwork for flat battery breakdown snafu
    • £10 to Emergency Fund
    • £63 to S&S pots (woohoo, FTSE is tanking)

Good heavens! You've done so much! Its the old thing, isn't it - if you want something done, ask a busy person [oops]shame[/oops].

Great post, between the Leif Erikson bit, the image of bowling over male relatives with presents, as well as mentoriish, there's a lotta fun right here :D

Well done on the forecasting. Being seen as someone who gets things done should help you. Let's hope more opportunities to shine come your way, then £.

    Well done Mr E :)

Mentorish loved the forecasting approach and I got some good tips, but we were both struggling with predicting cyclical variations

A very boring training course for most of tomorrow, then a weekend of DIY and housework. Ho hum.
