If your garage is a concrete sectional one, they're cheap enough to replace entirely. Nothing wrong with sealing it up in the manner described to get your car out of the weather but I wouldn't be spending much money on it.

Eventually I'd want either brick built or nothing. If we were in the house for, say, 15 years, I could see a wrap round extension eating a little bit of the garden and a posh shed or similar for outdoor storage/studio space. Not cheap if we have asbestos...

Excellent news re. the whisky. Are you going to be investing in more to sell?

Yes, can't help myself, always got an eye open for a wee collectable or arbitrage opportunity (for example, bottles that are still available on offer in the UK for £145 were selling for £250, presumably to overseas buyers who can't get them shipped any other way). I will definitely be more selective though, would onyl expect to sell a batch every couple of years. Whisky is good in that respect as it doesn't take up a lot of space and it doesn't spoil.

The ones that amuse me are the "ready prepared" vegetables in Sainsburys. :rotfl: No idea if they're the only supermarket selling them but how lazy have you got to be if you can't be bothered to slice a carrot?

There's an entire BBC TV series based on this very premise! I doubt that you will have seen it, but definitely a guilty pleasure for me :rotfl:
Nice one on the whisky, Ed. I don't know which is more Scottish - the purchasing of the whisky or using your financial 'Ed and making a profit on it! :rotfl: ;) :T

Probably, but to whisky aficionados I'm as bad as a ticket tout! :o:p

Yay to this form of ticket touting!

Can I just put in a word for ready chopped veg? Not for me, they never pass my shopping basket, but for my mum. Age 90. Who's really, really fed up of cooking - she often eats a third of a ready meal from Waitrose with some fresh veg on the side. Things are a bit easier right now, because my brother batch cooks and freezes the results, but when she had to do her own cooking, it was geting a bit much. Honest!

There's always one exception KC, suffice t say that I have never seen a pensioner putting ready prepared veg in their trolley at the supermarket, it always seems to be young or middle aged folk. Not sure if that's lack of time, laziness, or just fear of their food. The sort of people who only buy chicken breasts.

In that vein, I had an ex whose sibling ate the same meal every day. Beef mince with carrots, onions and gravy granules, served with potato croquettes. Every day bar the occasional takeaway. It was all they could cook.

    Everything is in its place.

It's funny, KC retires on Friday (payday for me). She's on the way out of the rat race and I figure I have another 200 months left to go

Did anyone else read the depressing as hell SLIS blog post about how parents couldn't hope to retire early? It strikes me that (maths aside), a childless guy really has very little frame of reference for writing up a piece with such a gloomy prognosis. I aim to prove him wrong, arch curmudgeon that he is.

I love watching Eat well for Less!
The preprepared veg is tasteless! I do however buy bagged salad at @ldi because I find iceberg lettuce incredibly bland and I don't like how it goes a bit dark around the edges sometimes. Oh, and the insects in between the leaves!!

We generally stick with chicken breasts (most of the stuff we cook calls for them), but we've never done pre-prepped veg. We are a bit lazy, but not afraid of food or lacking in time.

And that's why I gave several options - everybody matches one ;)

Personally, I'll always find time to butcher a chicken, whole free range chicken costs about 50p more a whole chicken vs. 2 breasts!

 200 months? Yikes ... I'm not going to think about 200 months' time for me, not yet. Not on your diary, anyway :rotfl:

Please, please prove him wrong! You and Frugalwoods can do it! It's all that plastic bought new. Erm, what's Mrs E's opinion on car boot sales for toys?

Should try this sometime - only started eating meat again a couple of years ago so still finding my way round cooking with it.
