Not everyone is as wealthy as you Alex :p

I believe it was a Thursday because there was a 2 year waiting list for the venue.

    :rotfl: :o

Wow, re. the two year waiting list. I thought it was perhaps a Scottish tradition.

You're my new best friend :D if you'd ever tell me how to do that :D

There was a free bar at that wedding I went to at the end of May - they were *definitely* (probably) as rich as Alex's family  shame that all I had was a glass of champagne during the toasts, and my sister paid for that, as the mother of the groom!

Your spends (a drill!) will last a while, Ed, you're allowed to amortise them (is that an American word?) over the next ten years :)

Have a lovely weekend though, movie night is important :j

:rotfl: I had an open bar at my wedding... 10 years ago . Anyhow, I cannot remember much about that evening :beer: and wish my wife and I had chosen to have a much smaller wedding with just a few people we're close to. These days I can't bare to see the photographs (nothing to do with having a bit too much to drink that evening, though).

Ed, I cannot believe you didn't own a hammer drill before this weekend... what have you been doing all these years? :p

    £1.37 OPed,

Miserable, grey weather. I am not, as they say, feeling it :(

I still haven't seen the official photos of that wedding, though a lot of ordinary photos get shared on facebook, of course. I took a few videos - the start of the rehearsal, the first dance, and I accidentally "videoed" two of the speeches - but my camera was in my handbag, and I just have the soundtrack! Very odd :D

:rotfl: Rather glad there was no facebook ten years ago, or if there was, it wasn't popular.

I find weddings are often strange occasions. My wife and I have been invited to quite a few over the years with a lot of people we aren't close to inviting us to their weddings. We had a lot of people who now want nothing to do with us (me, really) at ours and I don't really want to be reminded of that time of my life, to be quite honest. Yet we've been invited to some of these people's weddings even though they've no desire to speak to me. Seems like they feel obliged to invite us as they came to ours.

The biggest one we've been to was completely surreal. I knew the couple marrying and their families weren't exactly well off but the wedding had to have costed £30k+. Much of the wedding seemed like a competition to see how much they could spend hiring things for the day. The scary thing is 3 years later they had split and were seeking divorce. No idea how they paid for it, so could be still to this day paying for it. :rotfl: Probably the best one I've been to was a friend's who had a really small wedding which only lasted half a day, very few people (c.15), nothing hired, nice pub lunch and all very genuine.

We have been to a few weddings of that scale. Mrs E's best friend had 200? guests at her wedding and hubby had to sell *land* to pay for it
  • You should have a look at the T&sco current account, it pays 3% interest, you don't need to switch dds, but doesn't give you cashback. Might be worth a look if you want interest on your savings.

Some of that sounds very sad, Alex :(

I've come to the conclusion that the size of the wedding has nothing to do with the chances of the marriage lasting ... what was interesting at the Scottish one, was the comment of the photographer's assistant to me, that he knew whether a wedding would last from the attitude of the bride and groom to one another during the whole thing of posing for photographs.

The smallest wedding I've ever been to was one of those "I want to stay in the country" affairs ... I wasn't the one in front of the altar, I hasten to add. Bad days.
