BACS payment that doesn't go in until after 5pm?

Options
Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place in the forum, but wondering if anyone can shed any light.

My partner started a new job a couple of months ago and he gets paid 4 weekly on a Friday. I am on maternity so I only get government SMP which is £130 a week and yesterday bills went out of that as it's the 1st of the month. Today is his payday and the money is not in our account. But it's not the first time, both his last payments didn't go in until after 5pm on the Friday. His payslip says he's paid by BACS and his work colleagues also get their money in later in the day. Is this right? I thought that BACS payments were usually in before midday? I'm only asking because we rely more on my partners wage at the moment so until he gets it through me and my daughter can't go out today as planned. It's not a big deal I'm just confused as to why it goes in after banks close?

I'm going to keep checking it today to see when it clears but surely if today is what his boss says is his payday then the funds should be available for us to use today?

On another note I do have money stuck in pingit that I can't touch as I had to reinstall it on my new iPhone and it all went wrong and I have to go into the bank to verify my address, so just a warning if anyone upgrades their phone make sure you sort out any money transfer apps before someone sends you any money lol!! (That has nothing to do with this thread apart from yet another reason why I can't access money which is ours lol!)

If he gets paid today, no matter the hour, he's still getting paid on the right day. If you wanted the funds to be available for all of today, then you would need the funds in there yesterday.

If it's really too much of a stretch for you to wait the few hours, you should probably look at how you're managing your money.

It might be an issue with your bank not updating the account for payments received during the day until close of business or it may be that the payments aren't actually sent by BACS but by Faster Payments (if its a small employer). The latter can be more unpredictable on arrival time and on the other hand can be sent instantly so could be being sent later in the day on pay day.

On a more general note its never a good idea to have bills going out on pay day - things do go wrong - the person doing the pay can be off sick, systems crash etc so giving yourself a day or two between pay and bills going out can avoid bank charges etc.

You would be better asking this on the banking / saving board where a number of bank staff may be able to answer procedural questions.

From an employment point of view, the employer is doing nothing wrong providing they pay on or before the due day. Up to 23:59 is the day! Theoretically if they pay later than contracted they are liable for any unavoidable losses this causes but in the real world.......

I have to echo the comments about needing to adjust your finances to allow a sensible margin for error. Whilst, technically, you may be "in the right" sooner or later this will bite you!

Thank you for your replies and I'm aware that bills going out on payday is not a good thing but as I said I'm currently only receiving SMP and we are managing as best we can. I did not say I couldnt pay any bills due to my partners money not being in it was simply an enquiry as I thought BACS went in by a certain time and I was just wondering if his boss perhaps didnt pay him by BACS but another method. I dont get why people are being so judgemental and telling me that I need to take a look at how I'm managing my money, it was just a question, as I said its not a big deal I was just wondering.

Unfortunately you will always get some people being judgemental on a forum.

Depending on how big the employer is, it could be a case of somebody in the payroll department or even the business owner sitting down and keying the payments through on the day rather than them being set up on a scheduled run to be processed automatically in which case they can come through at any time.

Thats what I was wondering Slinky, as its a small business so I am wondering if its more like a bank transfer than a BACS payment.

This is exactly what my manager tells me.

Perhaps your partner could speak to his employer and ask for the funds to be paid earlier? (depending on how accessible the HR and Payroll department are) just to give you that breathing space?

I know that some direct debits/payments can't be moved (like Littlewoods for example) so changing the dates isn't always possible.

Just to add, sometimes it depends on the boss. It would be reasonable to allow funds to be cleared during the day so you can use them, however it's not a given.
The truth is out there... and I want to believe

Thanks silentkiller, yes my partner has spoke to his boss and she just says it will go in today, which is true of course but obviously banks (and shops) are all shut by the time he ends up getting it in his account.
He also said that his boss claims she processes the wages on Monday and I would have thought it would definately be in by close of banks Friday if that were the case but perhaps she uses another company to process them and sort out payslips as she is a small business owner.

It wouldnt help me moving direct debits anyway as I am paid weekly and my partner is paid four weekly so our paydays constantly move its just a case of making sure we have money for bills when they are due out (which I did) its just some weeks are better than others depending on which bills are due and of course bank holidays too causing bill dates and pay days to move.

    Thanks

They aren't being judgemental, just pointing out that having to adjust your plans over pay arriving a few hours late shows that you are managing your finances poorly, and don't have any buffer saved up.
