Plasma or LED Samsung tv

Hello all,

Our 8 year old tv has finally died so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'd like to stick with Samsung and I'm torn between a 42 inch Plasma PS43F4500 at £280 or an LED UE42F5000 at £360.

The LED is Full HD and the Plasma is just HD ready but will this make much of a difference? We use Freesat HD and have a blu-Ray player so do tend to use HD content.

I've not managed to find the plasma is a showroom so was wondering if anyone owned either of these models?

Thanks

Depends on what you plan to watch and whether you are bothered about power consumption. An "HD Ready" TV doesn't necessarily have an HD tuner. It simply means that you can connect an HD source to it for viewing.

We mostly watch tv and movies - not much sport.

We have a Humax freesat box so wouldn't need to use inbuilt tuner.

I'm not massively worried about energy usage - I think anything would be cheaper than the old tv which chucked out almost as much heat as the radiators!

For your general lounge viewing I would go with LCD every time as reflections are less. Besides that, it will be full 1080P (Full HD), the Plasma will only be 720P (HD ready).

I've got a UE32F5000. Excellent picture. At times, amazingly good HD images. Occasional lighter edges of the screen. Possibly due to the edge lighting? Very good, listenable sound.

Difficult one really. I've got one of each, a Panasonic plasma and an LG LED.

Unless you are watching Blu ray the the full HD doesn't really matter as HD transmissions are only in 720p or 1080i.

The hd picture I have on the panny is very good and it's good for sports because of it's superior refresh rate.

Personally I would say you get better quality picture for your bucks from a plasma but there are numerous factors that influence peoples decisions such as future proofing, connections etc.

    Thanks for all the comments.

I went for a 39' LED in the end - very happy so far.

hey guys, thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I also had an 8 year old HD ready 50" sony rear projection TV. it was playing up and also took up a lot of room. I know this is MSE forums but I do believe in spending a little extra in terms of quality and something that could last me further down the line.

I opted to buy the Samsung UE55HU7500. Specs
    55 inches
    4K resolution
flat screen (given that I didn't fancy a curved screen to wall mount)
    2014 model
Samsung smart TV with 3D etc.

I would personally go with LED TV over plasma. The reason I opted to fork out the extra for a 4K TV is because whilst there's no such thing as "future proofing" I figured that the last time I bought a TV was 8 years ago, that getting a 4K TV would extend the shelf life a little further, maybe a year or two, who knows.

Plus 3 games in the upcoming FIFA world cup will be broadcast in 4K (not reason enough to buy a 4K but just a bonus). Lastly, many blu-ray discs are now coming in "digitally remastered 4K" versions. Youtube also supports 4K video, and 4K cameras, whilst still expensive, are getting cheaper slowly.

I can feedback that the quality is exquisite. My feeling that spending a little extra now will mean you can extend the shelf life of your TV by a few years.

Can purchase from Richer Sounds or John Lewis

    Good luck

    Some 1080p on Freeview HD.
