The problem is that both the RAC and the AA hae become victims of their own success, they have too any members and too few resources to cope. I was with the RAC in the mid 1980's with their 'Reflex' package and had no problems as I never had cause to use them but a few years later I joined the AA and had a breakdown outside Edinburgh and they said they should be there within 4 hours!
Since about 2003 I have been with Autonational Rescue who are very good and can be recommended and they are also a lot cheaper than the RAC and AA, they also have a smaller membership and so get to you quickly. The only problem was that payment had to be made in full before cover commenced and when my circumstances changed I moved over to Norwich Union (stand alone) breakdown cover and I have the same cover as I had with Autonational Rescue but I am paying it in monthly instalments by direct debit which suits me better.
I have had to call out both AR and NU a few times and found their services to be quick and I can recommend both of these companies for their breakdown recovery services. Both can be joined online on their respective websites.0
