Remember if you go along the small claims route, you will need to provide an independent report stating the item was inherently faulty.

If Currys are unwilling to budge, get an independent report and go back to them with it. If they still dont budge then go along the small claims route. Try and keep everything in writing if you can, either via email or letter sent tracked.

It was £229 around the time the OP bought it, using the wayback machine. If that price helps anyone give a better opinion.

    TBH
it was a deal they were doing at the time, we bought everything from Currys including the hoover fridge and freezer - if we bought the two together they were £199 each. but i could not get the same model for that price now and we want to keep the matching combo - that is why we have said we would be happy for a repair, looking at advice on the symptoms is sounds like the compressor has packed in - i believe an expensive job.

As they have offered a refund of £124 on an appliance that cost you £199 14 months ago, this equates to about 62% which implies that you have had about 38% of the life of the freezer. This means that they think it should have lasted about 3 years.

If as Esqui asked, you are allowed to keep the freezer then this refund is fair (imo) and should hopefully cover the repair costs.

Hi I had a similar problem I bought an Indesit washing machine, after about 16 months the control panel went it still had the remains of the 5 yrs parts cover on it I contacted Indesit and they said it would cost I think it was £80 to come and fix it as I had topay the labour costs. When I had it repaired I contacted the ceo at Indesit and told him I did nt think I should have to pay this, as a result I was refunded my money. It is worth a try at this.

I have spoke to Currys and Hoover and neither really care about the problem, Currys offer is too low for a replacement and Hoover wanted £118 to come and look at it. i have sent a recorded letter to currys and i will put a claim through small claims. Hate speaking to people who are reading from a script and being recorded, must be soul destroying for them. We will see what happens but i am quite happy to take on Currys.

Attempting legal action is pointless until you have complied with your obligations under the Sale of goods act, one of which is the need for you to prove that the fault is due to a manufacturing defect (an inherent fault) and not down to misuse.
Currys offer is too low for a replacement
But they don't have to give you enough for a replacement.
As mentioned in post 2, if they offer a refund, this can be a partial one to take into account the use that you have had from the appliance.

Don't think anyone is going to win over the OP.

Let them make a fool of themselves in small claims. They come on here just to spout off, not to get advice.

If you do come back on OP, look at everyone's comments, might save you a lot of money.
