currys freezer failed at 14 months old

Hi
i bought fridge, freezer, dishwasher, oven, hob, washing machine and extractor hood from Currys when fitting my Mums new kitchen (using a credit card). the freezer has only been fitted for about a year and it failed whilst she was away wrecking the contents. I have contacted Currys using sale of goods act etc and they said they will not replace it or come to mums house and repair but they would offer £124.00 towards a new one. I think a 14 month old freezer should be replaced as the freezer (Hoover HBFUP130EK) should last longer, they also would offer nothing for the wasted food.
Any advice please ?
Adam

How much was the freezer? £124 back for a freezer that cost £125 would be excellent, whereas £124 back for a £1500 freezer would be awful.

Don't forget that your mum has had 14 months use out of it, so if they do offer money back, they are allowed to make it proportionate to the expected life span of the product.

After 6 months the onus is on the customer to prove that it was due to an inherant fault, not user misuse/damage. So if Currys won't budge, you will need to get an independant report stating such, and then get back in contact with them.

Well its up to you to decide if £124 against a new one is a fair deal. If you dont think so, then write to them by recorded delivery stating that you do not consider their offer reasonable and state what you consider reasonable. Also state that if you do not hear from them by X date..say four weeks hence, you will initiate proceedings in the small claims court . Now i know people will guffaw and go on about independent reports and inherent faults and i know that this may well be the case but i have had success with the above strategy . It depends how keen the company are to avoid scrutiny in the court.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Firstly - thanks for the replies.

My point i made to the girl from comet was that they could get someone to come and repair the freezer as it came with a 4 years parts (only) guarentee from Hoover, this would probably cost them less than their offer of £124.00 or they could do a exact swap so they could take the old unit away and do somthing with it, however i believe £124.00 towards a £300.00 freezer is a bit off the mark. I like the small claims option, I spent a fortune with them. I understand that upto 6 years should be expected for white goods, and i expect many people have freezers that work for 15 years plus.

I'm guessing Comet is a typo as they went out of business about 18 months ago, plus carrmix says they have talked to the company which would be a bit difficult if it was Comet! :)

Just wondering - do they want the fridge freezer back if you accept the offer? If not, take the money, spend it on the callout charge for Hoover!

The freezer is for sale at £299 now but how much was it when you bought it? If it was in sale at say £199 then what they have offered is fair, if it was £500 at the time then their offer is way off the mark.
