I'd still Apply for it as it will have a discount for your next card. It might be worth checking if you can buy post dated.

Most of the time , the kids go free ticket works out cheaper for me, especially if you're travelling with two children

If you want to use the railcard you have to travel while it is valid i.e. up to & incl 31/07/14. If you want to travel after this date you will need to renew the railcard.

Not sure if it gives you the option as never brought from the machines but you could buy from red spotted hanky then you can collect tickets from station machine that's what I do to save time

Yes you definitely can. Also you can book online as long as you have the card when travelling.
