Weeds on grass

Hopefully this is an easy question for someone who knows.
I have cut my grass but the weeds (mainly daisys and dandelions) are growing all over it within a few days of my cutting the grass.
I have heard that there is weedkiller that doesnt kill the grass or similar. Is there such a product and if so what is a good one?

thanks Paul

Depends a bit on what the bigger picture is - there are grass weedkillers like Verdone which you can spray individual plants with or ones that you can water over the whole area and kill them out. Personally if you are going for the latter approach because you have loads of them you might be better with one of the 3 in 1 products like Evergreen (or Westland do a version) that kill weeds, kill moss and also feed the lawn. The last bit is important because if you just leave gaps something will fill it - probably the next weed seed floating about. I'd also recommend later on (after the treatment has had chance to work fully) getting a small pack of grass seed and overseeding so that you are adding some new stock to your lawn.

After buying seasonal lawn products and waiting for the right weather I gave up and got GreenThumb in. A fiver a month for two lawns and no weeds. They do four treatments a year.

feed and weed is probably what you need and you put this down using a spreader preferably, we do have greenthumb and when he came yesterday he was saying he was surprised by the lack of weeds we have, they only spot treat the weeds. You could have them in for a one off treatment I am sure. What you need to do is not cut the grass too short in the first place that is how the weeds get in and grow, if you see any dandelions pick off the yellow flowers before they set seed to reduce the spread.

A healthy lawn is less likely to have weeds in as it has to compete with healthy grass. As suggested use weed and feed. You might have to re-grass some areas where weeds/moss has been

I have used Verdone Extra for the last 10 years. You dilute it and use a watering can or sprayer to spray it over the lawn.

You only need to do it once a year and it really does work. My neighbours' lawns are full of dandelions but mine has only one or two.

Yeah they're called selective weedkillers, a common one in grass products is "2, 4-D" it kills broad-leaved weeds but not the grass.

You get it in the combination weed and feed products but can also get it as a spray for spot treatment, the generic/no-name stuff is cheap enough - get it in the discount stores, Homebargains etc.

If you want to kill moss a long used and cheap product is 'iron sulphate' or 'ferric sulphate' you can buy it cheaply as a fertilizer in places liked Wilkinsons and depending on how you mix it up with water it makes a potent moss killer, at lower doses it helps green up and harden turf - google it, there's lots of info. (Re. the greening - it's not a substitute for nitrogen fertilizers though)

thanks all for your input, very helpful.
I moved into my house just before christmas and have only just started mowing a couple of times, and weeds all over the garden. I would say over 50% looks like weeds/dandelions etc.
I wil give the products mentioned a look, have seen verdone on amazon for £10 for more than I need. Will give it a whirl and see how it goes.

I also found, thanks, a greenthumb near to me and can always give them a call if i make a hash of the weeding and seeding:)

It is illegal to use sulphate of iron on lawns, unless it is in a product specifically for using on lawns. Direct quote from the RHS:
"Note on ferrous sulphate: Although ferrous sulphate is widely offered as a fertiliser and soil acidifying agent, unless it is contained within a proprietary lawn mosskiller it is not approved for use as a pesticide and cannot be legally used to control moss. In addition, if it were to be applied as a mosskiller on lawns there is a high risk that it will blacken and potentially kill the grass - a problem seldom encountered with proprietary lawn mosskillers, especially those in pelleted forms, making them easy to apply evenly and accurately."

Combination products are not as effective as selective weedkillers IMO. I always tell our customers to use a selective weedkiller (SBK, Verdone Concentrated or spray, Doff Lawn spray etc) if the weeds are bad, then use a combined product once the lawn issues are under control.
