Checking gas usage

I have just been trying to use the energy club but when I enter my monthly usage (kWh) it tells me I have made a mistake and I can only enter a maximum of 21250 kWh per quarter.

My average quarterly usage (according to British Gas) is 28641 kWh.
Does this seem extortionate? I'm beginning to wonder whether I am paying for the whole street!

You can't be using 114,564kwh a year in gas surely?!

Even 28,641kwh a year would be a lot. Average is 13,500kwh.

What do your bills actually say? Are these estimates or actual readings?
Have you been taking meter readings yourself? Are they converting your units correctly, in terms of imperial or metric?
  • I am using 114,563.69 kWh a year - or so they say. I have two meters - one newish and one an old imperial one. My house is bigger than average, but I only heat the rooms I use and even then I am careful. Most of the time I am swaddled in blankets!

I do have a gas Aga that is on permanently. Could it be that?

I think it might be! :money:

There is something seriously wrong with these numbers -
For a start there is a huge difference in consumption during Winter Qtrs, to those in Summer - The rule of thumb is that 80% of the gas bill is incurred during the Winter months, also suppliers don't usually talk of consumption in Qtrs. it's the consumption over 365 consecutive days that they want to know
( Was this figure given over the phone by the Customer Service Desk - If so it should certainly not be relied upon

Try to establish your actual yearly Kwh consumption from past bills and then post back

What is connected to each of the two meters? Are they being billed correctly, one as imperial, one as metric? Have all your bills been using actual readings or estimated ones?

How big is bigger than average for your house? Sounds like you could heat a 10-20 bedroom mansion for that much gas!
  • Good grief! The Aga website says it costs about £2.50 a day to run! Either they are fibbing or I am somehow spending £4300 on gas in mysterious ways. Is there any way of checking my usage or whether my meters are working properly, or do I just have to trust BG?

Are both meters being converted correctly? That is, is one meter metric but they are both being converted to kWhs on an imperial meter calculation?

Unless you have a massive house, I don't think even BG would trust their own meters at the amounts they are recording. I should think they'd agree to a meter check. How long has this been going on for? Has there been a sudden increase in usage this year or have you just not lived there that long?

(A range is only going to cost four to nine hundred pounds to run. Your bill is for some other reason.)
  • I have taken the figures from the bills for the last 4 quarters.

The new meter is for the main house - hot water, CH and the Aga. The old, imperial meter is for an unused annexe, so it just runs the CH on 'frost'.

The bills are a mixture of my readings and the gas man's readings.

To dogshome: My actual quarterly kWh usage from my accounts (both meters) are:

    Apr-Jun: 19613.11
    Jul-Sep: 12957.42
    Oct-Dec: 28508.26
    Jan-Mar: 53484.90
