Travel Insurance Refund.

This morning Shearings rang me to cancel a holiday because of low numbers.
They agreed to a refund of around 1200 pounds.
I then rang the AA to see about getting a refund of the premium paid for holiday insurance which I took out around a month ago and they said that I am out of the 14 day cooling off period then I cannot have a refund of any of the money paid. They said that this was told to me during the call where I took out the insurance and it probably was but seems a bit unfair that I have to forego £70 odd quid through no fault of my own?
Can I claim it as an unfair 'term' or can I claim from Shearings because they have cancelledmy holiday and I should be put back in the position I was in before I booked the hoiliday.
Thanks in advance.

The policy will still be covering you, there is no unfair term. It's not the insurance companies fault you took a policy with them and are not obliged to refund it just because you ask.
Can't you just rebook another holiday? I assume as this is £70 its an annual policy that will cover multiple trips, if it is possible you can have the benefit of numerous trips and would have no right to ask for a refund.0 -
No, it isn't an annual policy, it is an 8 day policy covering myself and OH.
I realise its not their fault, but they will not now have the risk. Neither is it my fault
I wont be going away now as I was going to miss a wedding whilst on holiday so can now attend this.
I may give Shearings a ring and see what they say.
Thanks for your time.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

£70 for single trip insurance? You have been robbed!'Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.' George Carlin0

That was the cheapest.
For 2 people, 9 days in Germany, with health problems so pre existing cover too, not robbed at all, the next price up was £105.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The thing is the insurance would have covered you from when you took it out if something happened and YOU had to cancel. In effect the policy had already commenced.0

My OH and I have multiple health problems and are both over 60. I got annual travel insurance with ALL conditions covered for just over £200, so I feel justified in describing £70 for eight days as a rip off.'Never argue with an idiot. Single trip is always more expensive. We have no intention of going abroad this year so have no need to buy an annual policy.
You are comparing apples with cabbages in your asumptions.
What I suggest is try getting a single trip with all your multiple health problems for 2 people for eight days abroad, and you will find your justification well misplaced.
You will then see there is no rip off at all, I notice you didn't mention the company you took this insurance out with, I will give them a call to see how much they would charge xmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

But if you're not taking three trips within the year yours would be a rip off!0 -
McKneff do you understand travel insurance and what it covers you for and from when?0

The insurance covers you for numerous things such as medical expeneses, lost luggage etc etc. You need to check your policy documents. It does cover cancellation but you have already been refunded in full I assume. It does not provide a refund of premium.
As Gik has said the cover has already commenced, have you called the insurer and asked if they will cover you for travel on different dates instead so you can book another trip? Or tell them the situation and see if they will refund it? Only the insurer is going to give you the answer for this.0
