Relocating to the UK

We have been living abroad due to work for 4 years. We are returning to the UK permanently in the summer. I know it sounds silly but what things do I need to plan for?

Schooling is not an issue as the kids will be attending a private school but it's things like savings accounts, utilities, etc. the practical day to day stuff.

It's sort of an open ended question as I haven't been back to the UK in almost all that time. We're also moving to a new town so that will throw up other issues.

Any thoughts / ideas would be gratefully accepted.

TIA

Not much has changed in the last 4 years. Only possible one that can catch people out is the requirement to have insurance on a car thats kept off the road unless its SORNed but then most people living here dont realise the change anyway.

    Are you buying or renting?

Unless you have maintained banking arrangements here whilst you were away then your credit record will be fairly blank and so you may struggle to get credit when you first get back which could include renting a property so you may be asked to pay 6 months or so rent in advance.

If you are with an international Bank like HSBC or AmEx and havent maintained banking here then ask them about their international relocation options. Generally only available to those with their upper tier products but can be useful to get over the initial hump of no credit record

Register with GP asap. If not and hospital treatment is needed you will face tough questioning. Have you maintained NI payments?

    Hi

If you have been away that long, your credit rating will have taken a hammering, unless you were registered on the electoral roll etc.

    1. If you cannot get an international bak to arrange an account, organise a basic bank account as soon as possible. You may need something like a council tax or utility bill but there is no credit check.

    2. Get yourselves registered on the electoral roll; without that your credit rating will not improve.

    3. If you are renting expect to pay 6 months up front.

    4. Do a credit rating check when you return. There is always the risk that some unknown insurance deal was added to an account and has caused havoc. You can unpick this.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Do you have a job in the UK to come back to - you won't be entitled to benefits unless you satisfy the habitual residency checks.

No benefits needed, thankfully. Own our own home and have savings. Also, job in the pipeline. I will be asking more 'silly' questions as the time to relocate gets closer.

    Thanks

Are you both British or EU citizens? If not, there will be immigration issues as well to consider.

Why would you come back to this dump?

Go and see some of the world (2 weeks all inclusive in Marmaris/Benidorm doesn't count). It might open your narrow mind and help you appreciate the amazing country you're fortunate enough to live in.

We live in a beautiful country and, having lived abroad, I prefer living here
