DrivePlus

I just got a quote for drive plus insurance for £2500 compared with £3120 for normal.
I was wondering as a first time driver with no previous insurance would my premium go up, if they find I am not a safe driver for the current year? If not then, would it be better to get drive plus and then the following year get normal insurance hopefully with a NCB?
Im not sure if this is how it works?
