Your pay monthly contract will not run out. You will reach the minimum term, but unless you specifically call to cancel / upgrade / switch plans it will continue running.
If you want to remain with Three you should call them and suggest you are looking for a Sim Only deal to save money and see what they can offer.
Unless you switch to a different network without using a PAC code from Three you will be able to keep your number.0 -

Thanks, but you haven't answered my question.
I want to go to a new supplier for a new phone, keeping Three as the network.0 -
Why not ring three direct and ask about an upgrade?0

Done that and they will not match the deal I have found.
Now .... back to my question ... anybody.... please.0 -
If you buy a new contract with Three as a new customer (from a different 'supplier' or from Three directly) the only way to keep your number is to port it in two steps via another network PAYG sim.
That said, some 'suppliers' do upgrades as well allowing you to keep your number.0 -
Whenever I have upgraded my phones in the past I have gone to Car phone warehouse rather than directly to o2 (whom I originally took the contract out with) and have kept my number and not needed PAC codes etc, this is not a 'new' contract per se but an upgraded phone deal, basically the same but you keep your number automatically.YNWA

No, it isn't possible in the normal sense of porting the old number onto the new sim, you would need to port the number out to another network and then port the number back in again from the other network onto the new SIM card.====0 -
Right I think I know what you're getting at correct me if I'm wrong.
Your present phone and contract (mobileA) is from Three and the contract has finished the minimum period or is about to.
The contract and phone you wish to buy is from another retailer but still on the Three network (mobileB)
To transfer the number between the phones you have to request a PAC (mobileA) you will then have to obtain a SIM from any network other than Three (O2, Vodafone, EE or any of the MNVO's not using Three). Transfer the number to the PayG SIM, once the transfer has gone through request a PAC from the PayG SIM company and transfer it back to your new Three contract (mobileB).
I am unsure as to whether transferring using a PAC automatically ends the old contract so would suggest that you ensure that it has been terminated after the transfer.
It may be possible to get Three to transfer between the SIM's directly , but they usually will not. Your best bet would be to try their Twitter support team @ThreeUKSupport0 -

Also, the OP asked about a new contract, not upgrading, because new customers usually get better deals.0
