Iceland cheapest sausages and burgers, work out at 40p per head for one sausage in a roll and one burger in a bun, so yes £1/hd is doable

If you've only got £50 to play with, then cheap sausages it will have to be.

Is this £50 just for food, or does it need to include charcoal, paper plates, plastic cutlery, serviettes etc etc?

I would seriously look at asking people to bring their own food, if at all possible. That way the £50 can be spent on bread, sauces, salad, nibbles and so on.

If that just isn't possible, you can shave a bit off the overall cost by assuming that not everyone will want everything - so for example 40 sausages and 40 burgers may well be enough as not everyone will want both a burger and a sausage. Don't bother buying salad - no-one eats it anyway. Use the ketchup etc that you already have in - you'll need to replace them later, but it'll save a bit of money in the short term. Use kitchen roll instead of serviettes.

    Have fun.

We've done barbecues before when things have been really tight where I have spent our budget on things like salads, breads deserts and cheaper things to BBQ (veg skewers for example) and asked guests to bring their own meats.

This has always been a big success, BUT, its been ona. Smaller scale. A couple of dozen different people's meat skewers, sausages and burgers I can keep track of....fifty I would find very difficult.

I feel that offering one sausage and a roll is likely to leave bigger eaters unsatisfied and its a lot of fuss to stand around the BBQ for one sausage each. For others , those previous about meat source, as increasingly common, its difficult too.

Edit: I'm hugely impressed my JIL's shopping list ( though its clear to see why meat standard improvements are so slow :( )

    Expanding on this...
Pinapple grilled on the BBQ and dipped in chocolate sauce and sprinkled with desiccated coconut are fab. A different sauce option is a rum laden caramel/butterscotch sauce.

Lots of fruit can be grilled, peaches, grilled and drizzled with honey are delicious.

Bung lots of potatoes in the oven for jacket potato halves, bulks out the plate a treat and filling too.

Lots of homemade coleslaw and potato salad are good too.

Not sure up you can do 50 people for £50 but good luck.

Thank you for all the replies. I have managed to up the budget by £50 so that's £100 in total with £20 in Iceland vouchers, £10 found in cupboard from a Christmas gift and the rest saved up.

I have already been and got a lot of stuff and still have £60.

16 x chicken breast for the kebabs
    50 x burgers
    64 x sausages
4 x savoury rice for the rice salad

frozen diced onion, frozen peppers and all other ingredients for a chilli con carne
    sauce for a pasta salad
    Tom and bbq style sauces

Just need now to sort out buns and rolls and we are good to go. The rest of the money can be spent on booze and the like
