lemon juice odour neutraliser

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help with this. I heard somewhere that a lemon juice and water solution will make a good alternative to something like febreeze. I used to use this to spray my sofa, rugs and curtains occasionally, but am loathe to use it now as my dog is developing allergies.

I have a bottle of lemon juice- will that be OK rather than squeezing lemons? And what sort of lemon to water ration should I be aiming for?

any name x

Personally, I wouldn't use bottled lemon juice - it can get sticky! I think the peel could be more effective. There's a couple of threads about alternative air fresheners/de-odourisers

I've used bottled lemon juice and water, or alternatively, vinegar and water. The latter doesn't smell so nice initially, but it does dissipate, and does eliminate odours. Both definately helped with doggy odours, I don't tend to need it so much now as we've switched to a leather sofa and to blinds rather than curtains, but I use them occasionally on the rugs.

Another option is bicarbonate of soda - leave a pot on the side to absorb odours, and once in a while sprinkle on soft furnishings & carpets, leave a while, then hoover off. Chinese supermarkets can be a good way to bulk buy cheaply.
  • Ooh thankyou. Loads of ideas.

I did try bottled lemon juice and water last night- I had a good spritz before going to bed, and this morning it does smell fresher. There's no lemon smell which is good, and the dog didn't seem concerned when he came down with us this morning.

I am going to try the sitting room today (upstairs) when I go to work. I haven't noticed it is particularly sticky but I will bare that in mind. We don't have carpets but have some rugs downstairs which I think are the cause of the worst of the smell so will have to try the bicarb of soda on them.

I am pregnant and i think that it making me particularly sensitive to smell at the moment!
