Wedding Cake on a budget

We're getting married in less than 4 weeks - a cake was not really on our list of priorities but we're now thinking of getting a reasonably priced one.
I've been looking at the M&S cakes - we would only need one layer, suitable for about 35 guests. But the M&S cake looks tiny! I've read the reviews and most agree that it is too small. Even the extra large one does not look large enough for 35, and is only 5.5cm deep?
I've been looking at other supermarket celebration cakes but there is hardly any size or portion info on websites.
Can anyone recommend anywhere to buy a budget cake? It can be as simple as possible, preferably fruit cake with plain ivory icing. I've already ordered a topper from eBay! Something around £50 would be excellent if possible. Professional websites seem to be about double that price even for something really simple.

Why not ask your local bakery for a plain white "birthday" cake, telling them you want to decorate it yourself. Will be a lot cheaper than a "wedding cake".
Another thing you could do is buy the M&S cake you like for the photos etc and then get a couple of cake bars which are just plain iced cakes to be cut up to be served as the extra portions you need. Just google
M&S wedding cake bars to see them.0 -

How about getting some smaller cakes made up instead, that way each one is perfect for a one person portion instead?
Something like this looks nice... get some plain white cakes, and put some ribbon around the bottom and voila.0 -
Would you actually need the full number of portions?
Not everyone eats wedding cake...I've been to plenty where I've never eaten any cake.0 -
Could you buy a few cake boards like these (nothing to do with me)

to stand your cake on and then wrap a thick piece of ribbon round the bottom of the cake/board giving the illusion that the cake is deeper than it is.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

Hi Jen,
I'm in Thanet.
Thanks for all replies. Having had another look at the M&S cake I think we will probably go for the large or even extra large layer after all. As Domino suggested, not everyone will eat a slice and it's not such a big priority for us anyway - we've only just decided to have one at all!0 -

My daughter recently had the M&S cake's & didn't think the XL was enough so bought the xl+ Large+medium & she had 65 ish guests everyone had cake & we were still eating the left overs for a week after!
Ok we didnt cut it into slabs there were cut as suggested by a proffessional 1 finger wide per person.
Both the M&S fruit & sponge was melt in the mouth & I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
My niece got married 2 weeks ago paid £480 for a professional wedding cake & it tasted naff.
The fruit was on the dry side & the sponge one was tasteless. In life try to be nice to others, you never know who you are going to meet on your way down...0
