Sorry for late reply, yes you will still need boards to support the layer above.
You can buy v thin cake board (2mm or so) which is the same size as the layer so it shouldn't be v obvious, but will support the cake.

    Edit to add:

you could trim the card to be slightly smaller than the cake so it's less obvious. It's really there to support the main weight of the cake, a cm round the edge without support won't make the whole thing collapse.
Or you could use ribbon, or flowers, or even some piped royal icing to hide any board that's on show.

You could always go for cup cakes instead?

I got an x-large fruit one, and large, then small sponge cakes on top, from M&S without board support and they didn't collapse at all.

If you use facebook go on your local buy and sell page and ask for a cake maker. Ask for recommendations. You could have a false bottom layer that is covered in icing then a real sponge on top. I would expect for £50 you can get a decent cake. A small real flower topper on a little plastic tray would only be about £10 to match your wedding flowers.

Thanks for all the replies! Just an update - we bought the large M&S cake plus the cutting block. As it happens we didn't cut the cake at the reception but had friends round the next day. The fruit cake is delicious and is a very good size, not as small as I thought it would be. I bought a cake topper from eBay for about £10 which looked fantastic. I also ordered some little personalised cake bunting from eBay which I customised with tiny roses from a craft shop (very cheap) and everyone commented on how good it looked (on the cutting block)!

In conclusion - I would highly recommend the M&S cake to anyone on a budget.
