I think the M&S cakes are very popular. We also bought three layers with the extra large one at the bottom and it was all gone in a couple of hours. Neither I nor hubby got to taste it! Still glad everyone loved it! I'd decorated it myself and got a lot of congratulations, so felt it was a success overall as it cost £100 all together rather than the £400 it would have been to buy the cake I used for inspiration.
  • M&S ones may well be the best bet. I can tell you from experience that taking the option to bake your own cake isn't necessarily a money-saver! Especially if you don't have all the kit already, like icing smoothers etc. Starting to regret that decision of mine!

I've heard from the wedding bits on facebook that the M&S Cakes taste amazing as well...not often people agree but they were all posting the cakes (they had all DIY'ed them up) and some looked amazing. X

hi can anyone tell me how you decorated your m&s cakes and how you stacked them. i was thinking one on top of each other but not sure how easy they would be to remove from the boards and im not sure how to decorate them if i use pillars or foam blocks. i was thinking of getting 3 sponge ex large, large and medium to serve aprox 60 - 100 depending on rsvps. our theme is cornflower blue (BHS) which is a lavender blue with horse shoes/thistle/heather/roses we are getting married in gretna so trying to keep a subtle scottish theme for reception back home. i was going to order a cake but the cheapest i can find is £250 and its very basic no different to m&s one.

why not just get a small round decorated, and then get a couple of cutting bars to make it go further.

If you're planning to stack your cakes you need to use dowelling to support the layers otherwise they'll sink into each other.

You can get the dowelling at cake decorating suppliers or possibly H0bbycraft? Cut to the same length as the height of the cake and push in. They will support the cake layers above.
If you use pillars they are hollow down the middle and you cut the dowel to the length of the pillar plus the cake layer below.

    Flower theme sounds lovely.
Hope you have a wonderful day!

allybee do you still need cakes on a board if there on top of each other? im guessing you would but the pictures iv seen dont seem to have boards. i was thinking of trying to take cakes off boards if i use this style but im wondering if i would need thinner boards the same width as cake instead. the cake is becoming the most stressful part of the wedding.

With our wedding one of our guests made the cake - depending on what your gift list is like maybe you could ask someone to give it as your present? Mine offered as she had just made her own cake and ours look beautiful. I would post a pic but I seem incapable...

the invitations are only going out 8 weeks before the reception until then no one knows we are getting married (elopement to gretna green lol) so i dont think theres time for anyone to do cake as a gift. although im pretty sure someone would of offered.
does anyone know what sainsburys celebration cakes taste like ? much cheaper than M&S and staff said they often do 3 for 2. but no good if there yuck. 3 sizes of spice with white icing.

Hi they have these in Tesco on 3 for 2 at the moment, have been told they are nice, but not tried them myself x

Dont think the link works but if you go to Tesco and search celebration cakes, they are only £10 each x
