JSA and attending College

HI All. Bit of a query. My child of 19 is hoping to attend a FE Course of a year, it's full time but in reality covers about 18hrs. This will be an additional Diploma so we won't be able to get Child Benefit etc. So she would be funding the course herself.

The college states that the course only costs £95 to the unemployed as opposed to about £1500. She's looking for ways to fund herself. What we're not really sure about is, we thought you couldn't get JSA whilst at College, so even if she was on JSA on applying and got the reduced fee, she wouldn't be able to carry on claiming JSA in which case she'd have to get a part time job, but then the College would class her as being employed and she'd have to pay the full fee wouldn't she??

Any ideas I'll contact the College tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any ideas? Thnaks.

    The few remission responds to time of enrolment and payment times.

    This is often earlier than you need to end JSA.

    Also some JC allow a full time course on the proviso that they leave if conflicts with a job offer/training.

    In short ask the college re payment dates (should be ok). With RE to JSA it may be and is likely to be that once they start the course they need to end their claim although they may find a friendly advisor who sees the long term future.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "additional diploma" - if it's a full time FE course you can carry on claiming cb/ctc until she reaches 20.

    I believe that if a Diploma has been studied before you can't get the CB and WTC again as it were. I understand it can extend to 20 but not when a Diploma has already been obtained. I'd like to be proved wrong but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

    I've never heard that rule before.

    What type of diploma is it?

    It's a level 4 Diploma of Further Education.

    Okay, I may have been a bit daft here. I looked up on the HMRC site below and read the courses whereby the Child Benefit and WTC can extend. I read the words;
    BTEC, National Certificate and 1st Diploma

    I thought 1st meant only the first Diploma studied!! To add, she's not had a break in her education at all. If anyone can put me right on that then that would be great.
    BTEC, National Certificate and 1st Diploma

    Actually having read this again, I see it says they have to have enrolled before their 19th Birthday, so we wouldn't be able to carry on claiming and and/or she wouldn't be entitled to free study. She's coming to the end of her first Diploma. :(

    You wouldn't jump straight from a First Diploma (GCSE equivalent, level 2) to a level 4 course.

    Are you sure you don't mean a DipHE, I've never heard of a DipFE and it wouldn't be level 4 if it existed.

    There's a few crossed wires here because of terminology. She isn't jumping from a Level 2. to level 4. The Diploma she's currentlt studying is a DipFE at Level 3. Which is Advanced level equivalant (Level 3). So there are definetly Level 3 DipFE.

    When I said she's coming to the end of her first Diploma I didn't mean her First Diploma, just the first Diploma at Level 3. As said in the initial post the new course she wants to study is another Diploma but it's at Level 4.

    Dibdabale has enquired about the same course here and you can see it's Level 4 here;
    www.accesstomusic.co.uk/courses/further-education-music-courses/music-courses/artist-development-level-4

    but is treated as Further Education as regards fees as described here;

    Artist Development – Rockschool
    Fees for this are as for Further Education Courses above in respect to a Level 4 course.

    Anyway we've gone off the track a little and it seems she'll have to look at other types of funding because she's already studied at level 3. Thanks for everyone's advice here.
