Petition about landlords not allowing pets in rented accommodation.

So what do you suggest the landlord does? Sniff each dog individually ? :rotfl:
I think the usual thing is, as someone's said already, for the landlord to take a whopping big deposit if they're letting to pet-owners. It's the landlord's house, after all. If it's your own bricks and mortar it's a different story.
I was just trying to say that not ALL dogs smell just as not all children draw on walls. A couple of posters were saying that all animals smell and that is just not true.
Of course landlords can choose who they like to rent their properties but it just silly to assume anyone with pets will destroy the house.Thank you, children often cause more damage than pets,
I think most pet owners who have been allowed to take pets with them tend to be more careful anyway as they are grateful to be able to keep their pets. I am not against them having to pay a deposit.
I have know a few people that rented properties out over the years and some of them have had tenants (no pets) that have totally wrecked the places and then done a runner. They have left them filthy and with broken items - cooker, light fittings, cracked basin etc.
I also know of tenants (some with pets) that have been great and not only kept the place spotless but also done work to the property.
Me and OH have redecorated every room in our rented house, put new carpet/laminate flooring in all rooms, put in a new bathroom, returfed the back garden etc. We want to live in a nice house and our landlord, although good in a lot of ways, will not spend a penny on the propertyThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

We used to rent with a house rabbit and left the house in a better condition than it was when we moved in, to be honest!
Unfortunately where I live there is a huge demand for rental properties and most don't even make it onto rightmove because they are snapped up so quickly. When we moved out of our rental house it was taken by the first people who looked at it. So landlords can be as choosy as they like.0 -
I can see a landlords point - I have 3 cats and they have wrecked my flat. Carpets are a state in the corners, one cat has scratched the door, wallpaper etc etc.
Im in a council flat - not meant to have cats but they know I do, and so does half the building. Never had a dog, but I imagine if they decide to chew something it up it won't last long.0 -

Its tenants like you that are the cause of landlords stopping others who are more careful from renting.

^^^^^ exactly! I think all tenants should have to do this. and we used to rent our property before we bought it. I had a dog and cat and we were careful to train our animals not to be destructive - in fact the kids were harder to train! but, we were conscious that it wasn't our house and we tried to maintain it in good order.
I cant see why it is a problem as landlords have the right to inspect their properties, and any damage by the tenant has to be put right by them (or it was according to the rental agreements I have seen).
you are always going to get the occasional bad tenant - and that is why you buy 'landlord insurance' isn't it? but, I think most people are responsible and pet owners tend to be just as responsible as everyone else.0 -
I've been met with point blank refusal from landlords about renting with my 2 cats, despite offering a larger deposit. No doubt dog owners have even less choice.0

I have a dog and two cats and I can see landlords' point of view.
My parents have a cat and haven't had much issue finding rented accommodation. Landlords were very hesitant, but parents offered a higher deposit and then offered to have it written into the agreement that any damage done by cat will be put right and the property will be professionally cleaned after they have, all the landlords accepted.
It's playing with fire for landlords. A lot of owners will be telling the truth when they claim Sir Barkalot is the perfect mutt, or Captain Furniture Scratcher is a wonder moggy. However, a lot of people will fib to get into the accommodation.
It always seems that they just seem to focus on dogs and cats, but rodents can be just as bad. We had a hamster that was a complete little sh*t and you couldn't put anything near to his cage without it getting pulled in and torn to shreds. When we first moved in, we put him on the table by the curtains and didn't think anything of it. Spare room, we never moved the curtains.
Week later, we came to clean his cage out. What's that weird fabric in his bed? Turns out he had managed to pull the curtain into his cage, chewed a six inch hole in it and then promptly used it for bedding. He had also started to have a go at a loose bit of wallpaper!
Thank god it was Ikea bargain curtains, replaced straight away and hamster relocated. That little !!!!!! did more damage to the rental property than our cat!0 -
I don't think it is reasonable to insist that Landlords are not allowed to say they do not accept pets
If your terms state clearly No Pets, a potential tenant can always request to keep a pet, showing that they are in all other ways the perfect tenant and saying pet is perfect too and agreeing terms for recompnese if there is damage
If the terms do not state No Pets and the tenant applies with a pet, who, in the opinion of the landlord, might cause damage, the Landlord has no basis to refuse to let to that tenant. The Landlord would then be obliged to take every tenant + Pet with no authority to refuse any of them
btw I work for a HA that has a pet friendly policy and have a friend with properties she lets out so see things from both ways0 -
Ive always rented with my dog. I move around every couple of years with work.
The first 3 places I had I told the Landlords/Agency I had a dog and paid a double deposit (fair enough). The last place of the three tried to stiff me with the deposit saying my dog had caused damage to the carpets and paintwork and all would have to be replaced. I knew for a fact he hadnt so I got an independant company to come and check with the Agency. The agency and the Landlord then both backed down as there was no problems. I had repainted the same colours and had the carpets proffessionaly cleaned often too.
Like some pet owners may take the p with a rented house, some dont. Same as some Landlords/Agencies may try to stiff you, some wont.
I gave up telling agencies and landlords I had a pet from then on (I know, bad), and they have never known about it.I know my spelling is shocking :eek: It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:0
