Some dog breeds don't smell. The breed I have doesn't and no it's not because I have got used to it. Even wet he doesn't smell
So what do you suggest the landlord does? Sniff each dog individually ? :rotfl:
I think the usual thing is, as someone's said already, for the landlord to take a whopping big deposit if they're letting to pet-owners. It's the landlord's house, after all. If it's your own bricks and mortar it's a different story.0 -
I'm sure they would get used to the smell after a whileI am a LL and I wouldn't take pet owners or smokers!
Reason being is the smell! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
sorry, but those people who will trash properties will do so whether they have pets or not.
signed the petition. I think its unreasonable to have a total pet ban.0 -
But I don't really care if not all breeds smell as I'm not going to test it out!I agree that smokers' houses stink as do most smokers but not all dog breeds smell - see my post below.

My awful MIL would not hesitate to tell me if my house smelt of dog (she loved telling me that my previous house smelt of my cats). In fact she has admitted that she cannot smell the dog in the house.
I'm not saying pet owners are more likely to trash a house but pet owners do have a tendency to accept/forgive their pets little "accidents" as it's part of their normal behaviour.sorry, but those people who will trash properties will do so whether they have pets or not.

I grew up with pets at home so I'm not anti them but my BTL is a business and as such I will conduct my business in a way that provides me with the least hassle.

I rent and had some problems finding a landlord who would accept my dog. My present landlord was unsure when I viewed the property but I assured him that I was pretty certain my dog would not cause any damage but if he did I would pay to put it right. He then agreed it was ok.
The children of the family who lived there before me had drawn on the walls in two bedrooms!
Thank you, children often cause more damage than pets,
I think most pet owners who have been allowed to take pets with them tend to be more careful anyway as they are grateful to be able to keep their pets. I am not against them having to pay a deposit.0 -

Thank you, you are quite right, it is the type of person that you rent to, not whether they have pets or not that should be looked at.
Not everyone that has to rent does so because they want to rent, sometimes circumstances change, marriages break up, jobs get lost, wages cut etc. Why should people that lose their homes through no fault of their own have to give up their pets as well? Their animals are part of the family. If they sign an agreement to put anything right that their pet may damage, then they shouldn't be discriminated against.
Lots of rented properties get trashed but not by the four legged animals that might live there, more by the two legged ones.0 -

All I'm saying is no dog has any guarantee that it will cause no problems but they all have potential to do so, more than other occupants, it is the landlords decision as to whom they rent their house to, I don't think it should be forced upon them!
Where on earth do you get that idea from? Have you never seen places trashed by students? Have you never seen places trashed by children/large families? Why would dogs cause more damage than any other occupant?
I'm not saying landlords should take all tenants with pets, they can still be particular about who they take but pets shouldn't have a wholesale ban either as most are very well behaved and as long as the landlord has taken a deposit, that tenant is going to be careful because they will want their deposit back.0 -
A friend of mine has been forced into rented property since her divorce when her husband ran up lots of debts and left her to pay for them. She is on housing benefit as she had to give up her business and she has a large dog. She has not trashed the three properties she has rented, in fact she has improved them by putting up better fencing at her own cost and mending a gate. The two properties she left before moving into the one she is in now were left in spotless condition, a tenant would have been able to move straight in.0

I rent with 4 cats and the lengths we've had to go through to find suitable lets that will accept pets is ridiculous. It seems the only ones who actively encourage pet owners (because they know no sensible cat owner will take them up on it!) are on busy roads.
Signed. And thanks for posting and helping to raise awareness0
