I have just watched some youtube tutorials and now feel totally inadequate.

I now feel like a 5 year who raids her mothers makeup bag. It made me feel that I just slap it on and I am really crap at it.

Off to boots tomorrow to see what the ladies say at the No7 counter LOL!!!

I don't want to be high maintenance but feel I need to up my game. I never know how to apply it and often think I look silly when I have tried new things. And never know what colours to choose.

Any one else feel the same.

Everyone will have their own opinion as to what is best - usually based on their own experience.

Why not try your local John Lewis or House of Fraser on a weekday (less busy ;)) and just wander round looking at the staff on the counters, then ask the one who you feel looks the most natural.

Also, be honest, tell them you aren't necessarily going to buy the whole range there & then, but would like some advice on what (for example) foundation is best in what shade and how to apply it in the way that suits you. You never know, you may well get a mini makeover, tips and some free samples!

I got foundationed once - don't remember the reason why now.
I didn't dare smile in case my whole face cracked - I'm sure it wouldn't have, it was just how it felt when you're not used to it.

I think I'm going to have to start practicing now though - the natural me is starting to look a bit ancient and I need to persuade prospective employers I'm not going to keel over on day one. Ageism in the workplace - not a good thing.

I like the Clinique bronzer it's very light... But check the persons make up application before asking for advice. I watch Lisa Eldridge, she has loads of tips, starts slowly and has LOADS of tutorials on her site from everything on how to conceal stops to full glamour make up etc so you can watch n bold up slowly. Plus she is so lovely it's impossible not to love her and want to give it a go...

She has helped me feel better about make up and less terrified.. Be choosy about who n what you watch.

    Good luck

Wow could not remember her name last night when I posted :o but I agree that her tutorials are great. She's great at explaining stuff and I probably wear a lot less foundation because I know how to use my concealer better now.
Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.

I did feel similar to you, alongside not wanting to come away from any of the counters looking like I was wearing every product they sell on my face at the same time! However, I eventually popped along to the Bobbi Brown counter in my local John Lewis store & found them really helpful (& I didn't look orange or overly made up!) They do a whole range of free make up lessons & I didn't feel pressured to buy

I would give the No7 counter a miss, over priced for what it is and frumpy formulas and colours, head to MAC, you can pay for a proper make up lesson from a proper make up artist, you will be surprised at what they can do and be so pleased you did this for yourself, don't be intimidated by sales girls etc, they need your custom! you can reclaim the money against any product/s, I would suggest the foundation then take the tips and ideas they give you and buy cheaper versions if you want to save some cash. Also check out goss make up artist (Wayne Goss) on You Tube for up to date and easy to do tutorials. Good luck, make up is fun :)

    Hello

I'm a qualified makeup artist and I'll be happy to help with any questions.

The main thing I advise if you're new to makeup is experiment and get the right tone and colour for your foundation. Nothing worse than wearing the wrong color foundation!

Work out if you're a yellow or pink tone, look at your arms and you will see a yellowish or pinkish tone. Colour match on your jawline in shops and blend it in.

The rest will come in time, just experiment, mess around and see what works for you. Key is to blend! ;)

For about ten years I went makeup-less and wore tshirts and trackpants while doing DIY but felt invisible.

So now I'm back to dressing up more, I started wearing makeup again when out. I've got mostly Clinique with some Clarins, The Body Shop and Max Factor.

For makeup and nail polish removal I bought cheap stuff, also for nail polish from Poundland and ASDA.

My suggestion would be to get advice over foundation because that's like the blank canvas. Then experiment with cheap stuff at home and just have fun.

If you're near a Selfridges they've got the Beauty Project on ATM, lot's if workshops, samples etc.

A lot of the beauty houses do comps, giveaways and dish out advice on Twitter.
