Maintainence payment probs for ex

Hi all,
I have just recieved a letter from csa demanding £900 for my ex wife from 1987. We had 2 kids together & i paid maint until 1997/98 when csa gave me a rebate for paying too much. At no time did i ever agree, that i can remember, to pay maint to my ex wife. I phoned them up & they said i had made payments until the end of 2001 but still had £900 arrears. For the life of me i cannot remember paying them anything for my ex, but my head was so in the sand years ago because of debt problems maybe i did pay but i have no proof.
Anyway my question is this, can I request some sort of proof that I would pay my ex wife money & also proof of what I paid & when so that i can seek legal advice? This is doing my head in because i am really strapped for cash like most folk. I just find it hard to bear that something like this can still haunt you 20 years after you have split & she remarried so quickly after we split.

    Wow.

That is a disgrace. There are Mums with babies struggling to afford the milk to feed them on today in 2007 - and they are harassing YOU, when your child is an adult, for money?

    !!!!!!?

whether you agree to it or not you had to pay maintenance for the upkeep of your children, what you could do is ring them up and ask them for a complete breakdown of whats been paid and when and ask them where the arrears come from :)

CSA only collect maintenance for children AFAIK! Maintenance for your wife would be paid directly to her or through a court. Also maintenance for your wife would cease when she remarried.

I would imagine that is why mothers on a low income get free milk tokens ;)

My point is, why are they chasing him on a case so old, when there are cases from just TWO years ago being completely ignored and Mums struggling today with BABIES to feed, not 20 year olds.

I have heard of backlogs, but this is ridiculous.

And before anyone assumes I am bitter about the CSA. I don't receive it as I am with my husband.

    I think it's disgraceful.

I assume they try and collect outstanding debt all the time regardless if it's 2 years or 20 years. Just because it's an old case doesn't mean it's forgotten about.

That's right. All arrears are owed and so the NRP must pay them. There will be no maintenance for the parent - I am not sure what you are saying here. The money will be owed to the parent with care of the children, for the children but it is not spousal maintenance, it is child maintenance. What makes the OP think this is maintenance for the parent?
  • OP stated arrears were from 1987. Since that was 4 years before the Child Support act, it strikes me that someone has got their wires crossed. The Act wasn't retrospective as far as I know.
