Facetime is a free service supplied by Apple for people who have purchased their products. They are fully entitled to amend it, or withdraw it at their leisure.

Apple may have such rights, but then the purchaser may also have rights against the retailer.

If a consumer bought a phone which was advertised as supporting Facetime, and then somewhere down the line that phone no longer supports it, that phone no longer conforms to the original contract as per SoGA section 48A. As such a refund is due from the retailer.

There may be a get-out for the retailer if they say that the customer could upgrade to ios7 but choose not to, this might be more subjective regarding speed of operation etc. I'm not sure the customer could be forced to upgrade though.

There was a similar situation with Sony removing support for Linux on the PS3. In that case at least Amazon offered refunds for those affected. http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=186006

One of the features that was available on ios6 was Facetime. (Similar to Skype etc.) Over the last few days this has stopped working and Apple has officialy said the only way to continue using Facetime is to upgrade to the latest ios 7.

So in short, to continue using a feature which was part of the original purchase, you have to upgrade to the latest operating system version which will then make your phone run slower.

The first part is not true, you can continue running FaceTime by upgrading to the latest version of iOS6 (6.1.3). The problem is that if your phone supports iOS7 then by default you only are given the option of upgrading to 7

A quick google shows several sites that inform you how to install a version of iOS other than the most recent, mainly they focus on downgrading but the process is the same either way.

As to the second point, I agree with others on here, upgrading to iOS7 on a 4S certainly didnt make any noticable difference in the speed of the device.

If the main objection to transgrading to ios7 is the look and feel, hop over to Camp Android where you can install any launcher you like just like any other app - for instance I use Nova Launcher free version and it is heavily customised to be just how I like it (but if you wanted to make it behave like ios6 you probably could get quite close - until you found other tweaks that made it better for you.)

Although not an Iphone user I am an Ipad 3 user and against my better judgement because some apps wouldn't work and of course Face Time I upgraded a couple of days ago to IOS 7.

Big mistake, I was on IOS 6 previously.

IOS 7 has transformed my Ipad from a highly responsive unit into a stuttering lump.

Google search scrolling is very jittery.

Wireless performance has dropped by about 10% on the same network.

However strange as it sounds I am one of those people who get travel sick and the parallax nonsense has made me feel ill. After my first session on IOS 7 it took around three hours to get back to feeling anything like normal.

I have tweaked all the known bits I can, changed wallpaper to a still one, even used one of my own flat pictures.

The whole layout of IOs 7 is amateurish, it is as though they have done some sketches on a piece of paper then implemented that, look at the waste bin for example.

The Safari home page is just 4 pictures and no google search.

Curiously they have even dropped the plug icon to show it is fully charged.

Whether they will include an IOS 6 layout option in IOS 8 without the fancy parallax stuff who knows they really need to.

I am already looking at an Android alternative as my Ipad 3 has been rendered virtually useless, for me anyway, my wife can use it ok.

Given how locked down Apple hardware is its amazing how vastly different peoples experiences are.

I put iOS7 on my iPad3 and have none of the problems you mention, no noticeable difference in performance nor network.

As to Safari - they have made a unified search/ address bar like it is on most browsers and so to search google from the home page you simply type the search terms in the top bar and press GO

To the icons, evidently these are personal taste. I understand the comment that the old icons and the design style was a little twee but I didnt think it a bad thing. I am not a fan of the new designs either but nothing that bad and there really has been no "layout changes" just minor tweeks. As to the comment on the waste bin? No idea what icon you are talking to.

They certainly wont be giving an ios 6 look option for ios8, but then there wont be an ios7 look option for ios8 either - each one has its own look and feel, for better or worse. There is a "dark" mode for iOS8 but at the moment its incomplete and requires a command prompt to enable it

Google search scrolling is very jittery. It shouldn't be. My iPad 2 runs perfectly with Google search scrolling. Maybe try a factory settings reset and load it all up again to see if that helps

Wireless performance has dropped by about 10% on the same network. If you're still in warranty, try taking it to the Apple Store. There has been a slight issue with this.

Go in to Settings > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and you should no longer feel sea sick

Or do you mean the symbol for Trash in Mail? In which case, it's just a line drawing of a bin, I don't really know what else you want?

The Safari home page is just 4 pictures and no google search. It shows the most visited sites. Google search is integrated in to the address bar at the top. Just type want you want to search for. Easy. Once you've used it for a while, the home page will become all of your favourite websites, which is useful

Curiously they have even dropped the plug icon to show it is fully charged. You can add a % to the battery, so it shows 100% when it's fully charged.

I've added comments above to hopefully help your situation and save you forking out on a new Android tablet

    Thanks Superhan for the reply.

I have changed the motion settings as suggested, also contrast and display does not seem to have quite the adverse effects it was.

Found a still wallpaper that looks awful but does not cause the nausea.

As for the waste bin, I liked the dustbin that opened and shut, that is just me.

Have located Google search in Safari, all ok now.

In respect of the charging , yes I have battery % turned on. In IOS 6 when the battery was fully charged the flash changed to a plug telling you that battery was fully charged. This happened a while after the % showed 100.

Researched this an that Icon has been dropped.

Wireless performance seems back to normal now.

Another annoying thing I have found is that all updated apps do not immediately disappear off the list after you have updated, this is a design intention apparently.

Am still tinkering and found a list of 45 things to do under IOS 7 so am reading that to see what is relevant.

At least I can use the Ipad without feeling sick for at least an hour which is an improvement.

    Thanks again

Yes, apps now update automatically (or can be set to do so), so it leaves the list there so you can check what updates have happened overnight (this is when I charge my phone) and see what new features have been downloaded.

To be honest, I infrequently even go in to this menu as I know all my app updates have come through automatically overnight so no need to have a look.

Hope it gets better for you!

As usual, most the things are simply different. People generally dont like change and I cannot think of a single new OS (mac, windows or anything else) where you dont get at least some people complaining.

Of cause in a years time when the next version comes out half those same people complain again that they've lost/changed those features that they'd been complaining about the year before but come to love.

I do like the auto updating of apps, saves me having to do it and saves my wife's phone have 30+ apps needing updating as she never bothered doing it. Most the apps I dont care about but a few I like easily being able to go in to see what changes have been made
