iPhone and ios updates

Been reading a thread on another forum and just thought id get peoples views on it here. Ive tried to keep it as short and consise as possible.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S were sold with ios 6 running as their operating system.

Last year, Apple released ios 7 which was a complete design overhaul.

A lot of people using the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S decided to continue running ios 6 instead of upgrading to ios 7 because:

1) They didnt like the new design.
2) ios 7 is proven to run slower on older devices such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

One of the features that was available on ios6 was Facetime. (Similar to Skype etc.) Over the last few days this has stopped working and Apple has officialy said the only way to continue using Facetime is to upgrade to the latest ios 7.

So in short, to continue using a feature which was part of the original purchase, you have to upgrade to the latest operating system version which will then make your phone run slower.

Interested in your views.

Haven't used Facetime for a while.

Still using iOS 6 on my iPhone 4S, and iPad2, and I've not upgraded, nor intend to, exactly for your reasons.

It's annoying, but nothing wrong with it. You are paying for the phone, not any additional services the manufacturer may or may not choose to offer
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

I dont agree with that. Unlike a PC, you wouldn't purchase a phone which wasnt running any software.

As such, you purchase an iPhone 4 running ios6. A feature of ios6 is Facetime and Apple advertise these features to increase sales.

The question is, Can Apple then say, to continue using Facetime on your iPhone 4, you must upgrade the software to ios7, despite it looks completely different and will make your phone run slower.

I have a 4s and run ios7 after upgrading the software, and I haven't noticed a difference in speed or performance. In fact, I actually preferred it once I got used to it.

Its really no different, white keyboard is all I have really noticed, slightly different call and lock screen.

I doubt you could argue that they have robbed you of facetime as the differences are minimum.

Companies routinely stop back supporting older models, so you could claim that you bought an item where support was available, and now its not.

Facetime is still available, and at no real quantifiable cost or loss to yourself.

I think if there was a cost in doing the upgrade there could be a case, but going from 6 to 7 is a free upgrade.

I've done it on all the iDevices in the house and its greatly improved the speed and stability, although some apps do seem to suck more juice than they used to on 6.

The only proven issue with 6 > 7 is the batch of 4's with wifi issues after upgrading - some chips die apparently.

I see no issues given its a free upgrade.

I seem to remember that the agreement that you electronically "sign" when accepting the Apple T&Cs ran to about 47 pages when upgrading to iOS7.

I will happily admit to not wasting 1 second of my life reading it - I just agreed, as I am sure 99% of normal humans did.

I am sure there would have been something in there regarding "any extra software provided at 0 marginal cost can be withdrawn at any time without notice". Perhaps you or your friend would like to read the T&Cs and report back....

(However this wasn't a financial contract in which case I would fully advocate reading all T&Cs in full several times before signing.)

Facetime is a free service supplied by Apple for people who have purchased their products. They are fully entitled to amend it, or withdraw it at their leisure.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
