I've used contactless cards for years - in Hong Kong and Taiwan before they were used in the UK. I too would prefer to have the option of having the facility disabled.

I can see that eventually there will be an opt-out (or even an opt-in) and that the FCA might insist on it.

My first contactless card was a Barclaycard OnePulse. It is a combined VISA, contactless and Oyster Card ( for London Travel). They don't make them anymore but still supply them to existing customers. I got mine at least in 2009 (I think)?

Metrobank have just sent me a contactless card - without asking.
I called them but they say they do not offer an alternative card.
AFAIK, this is the first bank not to have an "old" card available.

The guy said that I wasn't the only one to complain.

Like others, I fail to see why ANY transaction should work without a PIN.

For banks to say that they will refund money is hardly a help.
Why should the customer have to go through the inevitable and unnecessary hassle to restore the balance (and overdraft charges)?

I told Metrobank that their card would stay at home until they produce an alternative.

If you have a fraudulent chip and pin transaction you have to go through a host of hurdles to explain how someone has managed to get your pin at least with contactless the oneous is shifted back to the merchant to prove it was you.

My Capital One CC is my only non-contactless one left as the Hilton Hhonors became contactless as of yesterday. The AmEx card is contactless but the number of places accepting them is even smaller than the number of places that accept amex at all

Personally I like the tap and go approach

My Santander 123 is my only non contactless, but it is from April 2012, so they may have moved on from then.
  • I'm completely baffled why people make such a fuss about not wanting a contactless card.
You do realise that the first time a contactless transaction is made you will have to enter the PIN? So if you never make a contactless transaction(just insert it as normal, even when the reader supports contactless), neither can anyone else.

    Where did you read this?

It may be true of some cards, but not all.
